New Car - Landrover Defender 90 or 110

Hi all so after what seems like ages I have decided to make the
move and buy a jeep that I have been looking for a long time.
Has anyone got or ever had a landrover defender? I'm not looking
one that is already perfect and ready to go but would prefer
something that needs some work done on it, it would need to be
running but anything else aesthetically I'm not worried about as
I'm sure i could do some work to it. Does anyone know of anyone
looking to sell one?

Spent a few years turning it into this, not finished yet and
probably never wiil be. Its had a lot of extras added since this
photo was taken but you can see the start of the transformation.
Now has running boards big wheels and off road tyres, spotlights
bullbar, new engine (200 tdi) clutch mirrors steering..... you
get the idea. They need plenty of maintenance but its all fairly
simple. A few spanners and sockets and a good workshop manual.
Parts are very cheap, though if you buy something rough you will
need loots of them. Any questions feel free to ask. Its doing 32
mpg £200 a year tax and £170 for classic insurance. I drive it
everyday.

That's brilliant mate, that's like something I'm after. If you
don't mind me asking what sort of money have you spent on it in
total. PM me if you prefer. Looks class. What's it like off
road. Is there any major problems with them?

I paid if I remember correctly £1400 for it. I then bought for
£500 a rotten landrover discovery with only 60,000 miles on it
and took the engine and a few other bits from it. I sold the
other bits I didnt need like wheels and tyres gearbox axles etc
and got back the 500 I payed for the whole disco so the engine
cost me nothing. I sold my old engine for £300 which bought me 4
new tyres. The painting cost about £300 too. I would say the
whole thing to date has cost me less than £3000 including
servicing and mots for the last 3 years. Saying that I have
spent countless hours tinkering with it and if I was paying
someone even £10 per hour for the work I would have cost a
fortune.
But as I say they are very easy fixed especially upto about 1997
when they introduced the 5 cylinder TD5 BMW engine. The best
years are between 1990 and 97 which were the 200tdi and 300tdi
series engines. They are the simplest and most economical.
Second hand parts are readily available as there are thousands
of discoverys which were rotten but almost unused.
The defender are prone to rot at the rear crossmember chassis
outriggers door frames and the bulkhead just below the
windscreen. Get one with good steelwork and rot free. Everything
else is easily replaced.
They leak lots of water but if you go for an older one there
will also be plenty of holes to let it out again. The heater is
rubbish so I fitted a night heater (basically oil heating for
vehicles) from a truck with a timer so it comes on in the
morning and thaws her out even before I get out of bed.
I three years of trying I havnt got stuck yet. Been close
though. Got bogged in the moss with a trailer on once and had to
climb out the window as I was in that deep I couldnt get the
door open. I unhooked the trailer and she just drove straight
out. Put a long strap on the trailer and pulled it out after.

That looks well woodcock. What are they like to drive as an
every day yoke I have my eye on a 1999 110 with 97000 on the
clock and its just through mot.

I really like driving mine apart from the noise. There is no
carpet or sound proofing in mine and it does make it noisy. The
steering is very unresponsive compared to a car. They are
cramped, especially your right arm as you sit tight against the
door. Other than that list they are a joy to drive. Seats are
good, gear changes smooth and due to the low gearing they are
quite nippy upto 60 mph. Mine will do 70 at a push. They can be
geared to do more but you loss the pulling power if your towing
big loads. Maybe its just me who enjoys it. My wife refuses to
drive it. They are a sort of marmite thing, love them or hate
them.
The only way to find out is to go take a drive in one. A long
drive!
As regards pulling a trailer, how big do you want to go. I towed
this from Bangor to Portglenone, up the hill out of Belfast. It
was before I done her up and fitted the more powerfull tdi
engine. Almost 7 1/2 ton including vehicle.

get on ebay for one...
landys are great wee motors and simple to work on , yes they can
be cramped inside ...
if its within your budget try and get the 300tdi engine it was
by far the best they put in them ... the 200tdi isnt a bad
engine either ...
parts for landys are easy to source and are cheap ...
woodcock thats a cracking job youve done there ;)
