.17 Mach 2

Anyone on the forum actually using one of these? - don't really
want to start a debate about how much better the HMR is - we all
know the latter is more powerful. I am just interested to hear
how this little round performs in the field. I will soon be in
the market for another rimfire and the Mach 2 is something I
would consider - I know some folk have great praise for the Mach
2 and consider it a great round for rabbit out to 120m. - no
doubt some will argue that the .22lr can be effective close to
this range...........the Mach 2 just seems to do it easier and
without the explosive power of the HMR. Having said that, the
Mach 2 is certainly a wicked enough little round and hits pretty
hard. Would be interested to hear from those of you [if any!]
that actually use the Mach 2.

Can only assume from the lack of response that no one is using
the Mach 2.

Have you one yourself beanie?
My understanding is that the round never really caught on....
Basically hornady thought they could replicate their success
from the hmr but it kinda flopped.
I don't know of anyone with one. I'd have thought getting ammo
for it would have been a battle.

heard of it but havnt seen one or used one, i think you hit the
nail on the head when you said less powerful than hmr and that
22lr does nearly the same job, both popular calibres that are
easy to get and a wide selection for each :-\

The cal has not caught on and I don't think it will. If I had to
pick the next big cal it would be the .17 super mag. Def worth
looking at but it not out hear until next year and it will be
expensive but give it a few years and the price will drop as
they always do when more people start using them.

hmm looks interesting, 20g round at 3000 fps, reminds me of when
the 17hmr came out and made the 22lr look like a bb gun lol
being honest im not totally convinced tho - and before anyone
slaughters me this is just my own personal thinking on it - as
mainly it would depend on the price of the ammo; 17 hmr ammo is
still near 3 or 4 times the price of 22lr ammo (depending on the
ammo), so makes you wonder how much this new stuff will be even
when it settles down :o if i was in the position id be torn
between the 17 wsm and the 17 hornet (20g round at 3650fps
-ish). ive heard the hornet works out just under £1 a shot, but
due to it being a centrefire round youve got the option to
reload your own which could drop the price down a good bit,
unlike with a rimfire :-\
second small nagging doubt is what its actual use is going to
be? i know 17hmr and 22lr are capable of taking a fox down at
sensible ranges and with correct shot placement, but theyre not
ideal (which is why i finally upgraded to a .222 this year). the
17wsm is faster but still only a 20g round at 3000fps (or a 25
grain round at 2600fps), compared to my .222 50g round at
3345fps. then looking at the other end of the scale - and i cant
believe im saying this - it seems a bit too much power for
rabbits (especially if you want to eat them). so unless youre
planning on knocking them over at 250 yards and the ammo isnt
very expensive, then a 17hmr or 22lr could possibly still be a
better option ???
dont worry im sure im probably wrong, and the same arguments
probably came out when 17hmr was released, just thinking out
loud lol
