adjustments to our shootin season dates
By: semiauto Date: November 21, 2012, 6:33 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
some of us have already been discussin that we would like a
later start date & end date to our current game & wadin birds,
some of us think it would be more beneficial to the birds and to
huntin, I personally think every game/wadin bird from Grouse on
12th August to Woodcock 1st Oct. deserve a settlin period
before being hunted, then they will be in better condition for
huntin, instead of our shootin season endin on the 31st Jan move
it back too the end of Feb -- what do you think ? suggestions
       are more than welcome .

Thinking a bit more deeply about this today and the thought
entered my mind, forget about pairing up, breeding etc for the
moment and think about food availability. February is probably
the toughest month of the year for our game birds. October
November and December are generally not too bad there's still
fruit, berries on trees, barley and corn in field margins and
left over potatoes from harvest. By the time February comes
there really is nothing left. Is it a good idea to be pursuing
       birds struggling to survive?
Im all for a change of season. I think it would be good for
young birds, and the above maybe doesnt make much difference but
something to consider. Its something that antis may use against
       our proposal.
Sometimes when people ask for something they often like to get
something in return. If were are to ask to have our seasons
changed ( and I know we not gaining anything for ourselves) what
about introducing a close season for our humble woodpigeon to
help show we truly are thinking of our birds. Maybe with a
clause that a permit or special permission can be obtained
during closed season to shoot birds causing damage to crops,
spring drillings etc. Close season from March 1st to July 31 for
       example.

woodcock you raise very good valid points about food for the
birds and I'm not against you here at all but pheasants are
mostly shot by shoots to clear them up and get as much money in
as they can, ducks will always have feedin unless the weather
gets really tough and woodcock stay on into March and will
always have access to food again unless the ground is frozen or
covered in snow, as for pigeons and as much as I like to shoot
them & I only do mainly before harvest time I can't see anyone
carin about them bein protected as in early spring they are
feedin on rape etc, as you'll know pigeons breed all year round
so there is never really a time for a close season on them, I
don't shoot many over the winter anyway but there are guys who
do if they can find them in numbers, I'd say there's no chance
of a close season on them, I'm still for given all birds a
       sportin chance.
