       Second Rimfire
By: beanieboy Date: July 19, 2013, 5:38 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Some time ago I changed my HMR for a .22lr as I found the former
much too noisy. If I had to do it again I would have held on to
the HMR and just bought the 22, keeping both. At the time
though I just thought it would be easier to get rid of one for
the other. I much prefer the .22lr and will continue to use it
much more than any other calibre, however I fancy something that
will give me an edge when it comes to 100+ yard shots. So I
think I will treat myself to either a .17 mach 2, HMR or wait
for the new WSM .17, just to have for the reason stated. Is
there any problem getting a second rimfire? - do I need to
justify my application for this second rifle? I have held my
gun licence for 35 years and have always had a shotgun and
single rimfire. Interestingly a local RFD was full of praise
for the .17 Mach 2 and rates it very highly - anyone using this
       round?

Thanks for reply cjm - I like the flatter shooting
characteristics of the .17's, though the .22 mag is certailny an
option. What sort of maximum range would you expect to take
       bunnies with the mag?

It would seem that some of the new 30g ammo available for the
WMR now gives 2200 fps performance. This is not far behind the
HMR in terms of speed and it is packing a lot more punch with
the much heavier round. Accuracy with these new rounds is also
supposed to be impressive. This makes the WMR a better choice
       for fox.

No reason you can't have both, I had a 22lr and a 17hmr at one
point, said 22 was mainly for rabbits and 17hmr was mainly for
foxes, as long as you can justify each gun and give reason for
it then you can have as many a you can fit in the cabinets.
Heard of a guy had four 22lrs once, one for night shooting with
night vision scope, one for hunting from the day, one for proper
target shooting and think the last one was down for general
       plinking and target practice.

Was reading about the .177 hornet yesterday looks like could be
a good all rounder for someone starting into the sport although
rifles and ammo might be limited yet!!

I got myself a wee 17 Hornet about a month ago. Ace wee round.
1/2 inch groups at 100 yards in wind. Turns bunnies inside out
for fox bait. And then drop the foxes. This is now my go to
rifle. Love it. Its the Savage 25
