My "mayfly" trip June 2013

---------------------------------------------------------
I returned home last Thursday after my annual fishing trip on
lough Erne, Co Fermanagh where I spent 6 days camping and
fishing. All fishing was done from a boat and using dry mayfly
patterns. I timed my visit well with good hatches of mayfly and
the weather was kind to me, I never needed to wear a coat once
although the wind, or lack of it played havoc with me during the
last few days. All fish bar about 2 were in the 2-4lb range and
most in beautiful condition.
I made my camp on an Island located centrally to some good
drifts and areas which contain good numbers of fish.

From the first day I was straight into some good trout. Weather
was cool with the stiff westerly breeze which was giving a good
wave and feeding fish were easily fooled. I generally only kept
one fish each day which I ate fresh as a daisy. I took photos
of most of the fish I caught here are some examples.

/>
On the tuesday I had a very tough day, the lake was completely
calm for most of the day which made drifting impossible. There
was a poor hatch of fly and generally few fish feeding. I fished
from 10am and 12 hours and 10 mins later at 10.10pm I got my
only fish of the day. Heres a pic of the fish just as the sun
had give up for the day and one of the conditions during the
day.

Heres a couple ready for the pan. I gave the larger one to
visiting German anglers who had never had trout before as they
only fish for pike which when I next met them the said was
fantastic.

I kept all of the 5 fish I landed on my last and best day the
biggest fish around 4lb I gave to my friend who lent me the boat
for the week. I brought the other four home for the freezer and
my eldest son was only too happy to give them a rinse before
packing individually and freezing.

looks like puttin your trip back a week or two was the right
decision Ryan, from the stories I heard about the Mayfly you did
Very well too -- some very nice fish there for wild fish, great
pics too they make good viewin, it's nice to see how others fish
and how they get on.
I saw on fb yesterday a young lad of 10 was trollin Erne usin a
yellow/black taz and too a fish of 19lb !! frig you wanna seen
it I haven't caught a pike that big lol.
My Dad had good days and bad days on the water, but he'd a lot
better fishin up in the mountains on a wee lake - I don't know
what's it called - he fished it mostly at night's and got a half
a dozen fish almost every night, best fist was 1.5lb on Erne his
best fish was 4lb which he said hooked it's self as he was
takin a drink at the time lol he's goin back on Sunday so were
hopin the flys will still be on and down around his caravan so I
might take a few days up there next week if it's lookin half
decent.
well done again and thanks for sharing the pics --- btw did you
go on your own ?
semi

Thanks for the positive comments folks. I look forward to the
mayfly every year, its a bit like the October moon when the
first woodcock arrive, just that little bit special. Speaking of
woodcock the were two roding up and down the trees every night
when I was camping. A 15-20 minute flight around 11pm and again
just after 3 in the morning. You could set your clock by them.
Beautiful sight in the half light and the croaking sound almost
like a frog.
Semi, I did go on my own yes. That's the way I enjoy it most. I
did have a friend from work who came up for a few hours one day.
He got an nice trout and lost one. I had to give him my rod as
he only brought a sinking line with him. He now too can hardly
wait to try again next year as this was his first time.
