Quote Party Rework -> Get More Posters On Forum
DIR By: Chiefhero[sks]

A) remove the quote system
or
B) make it into a thread or some shiit instead of having it as
an "official headline" for the community forum. it can make a
new post for every "good quote" it detects, or just update the
same post continuously. im confident such a script/code/whatever
is easily created by the people who're hostbot legends around
here.
people like beeeh are refusing to contribute to the forum
because the quote system represents something "official" on the
forums, claims to be unbiased and automatic, but we can never
know whether the quotes are hand-picked to put certain people in
a bad light, or whether they are automatically chosen.
the other problem is that it limits contribution on Bnet as
well, where people are restricted in saying certain things about
certain people due to the possibility of it being displayed on
the forum. As much as people HATE to admit this; most people do
care about their reputation, and want to be able to say stuff in
a channel without it being displayed for people it wasn't
intended to be displayed for. this problem persist even if we're
guaranteed an unbiased quote-picking system, and encourages /F m
and whisper parties. it certainly has affected me when wanting
to flame someone who wasn't in the channel.
that's why i think alternative A) is the best choice, even
though i fully trust that the quote-system is automatic and
unbiased. I hope you guys will support this, the value of having
beeeh etc on the forum FAR outweights the 1/50 good quotes we
see on top of the forum, which most of us probably read on bnet
originally as well.
the quote party even loses all it's meaning if it's automatic,
as it's essentially impossible to create a proper formula for
finding ''valuable quotes''. change the formula to picking a
random quote every 30 minutes and noone will even notice...get
rid of it, time for freedom on bnet and more posters on the
forum.

Beeeh has never brought anything to value to any forum I've ever
been with him.
However, I agree the rest of Amir's post. Remove the quote
system!

I sometimes censor myself in the Behh-channel because I know
single quotes might be taken out of context and put on the top
of the forum, making me look like an idiot.

Beeeh- boycotting is not a good argument as far as I'm concerned
(even beyond the crazy reasons he has).
Now does the quote function limit 'openness' and the way people
express themselves on Bnet? I don't think so. The same argument
would apply to any type of bot that records conversation. In
fact, I think the argument would be far stronger for the removal
of bots - since they record the context as well (giving the
owner the option to keep or remove the context and then use that
information). We all know that whatever we say has and will be
used against us by botloggers. The quote function simply picks
certain quotes according to a formula out of all the input in
the channel - input that is already recorded and stored to be
used against you should someone seek to.
At the same time, it's a function I really like. I think the
quotes are great material and they often make me smile - just an
hour or so ago Trollpro had some crazy quote about "CsB Airport
Pissers" :D It offers a lot of value as far as I'm concerned.
The issue, as I see it, is possibly rather that the function is
biased towards other clan channels - but then again we should
all hopefully be striving to have a single large channel for our
community.

It limits how I (and possibly others) express myself because I
DONT want things into the Elder Scrolls.
It changes how people express themselves (current quote for
instance, "yeeee shoop trollpro sickchikens really chaise a
toilet lol ^^ rofl trashens - Rival[behh]") because they WANT to
get into the Elder Scrolls.
The issue is beyound that chat is being recorded, I think thats
sad but something we have to accept. But the problem with
elderscrolls is also that :
a) Quotes gets taken out of context (thats why I censor myself).
b) Quotes are put to public display which fills a much higher
incentive to change your behaviour either to avoid this or to
get into the Elder Scrolls than simply knowing what you say is
recorded.
c) It puts Exalius in controll of a platform nobody else have
access to.

well the fact is that it does restrict openess, as testified by
several people. ''key contributors'' i might add. and what's the
tradeoff? a random quote every now and then, most of which are
complete garbadge because the formula is lightyears away from
systematically displaying valuable quotes? let's not forget the
people who refuse to contribute because of the quotesystem.
there is valid criticism of the quoteparty (lowering bnet
contribution), and people don't wanna support a forum that have
such a quotefeature. seems to make perfect sense to not support
such a forum if you value bnet chat parties?
anyway, we know that elderscrolls restricts openess and we know
that it doesn't work for "displaying the funniest quotes on bnet
=D!". the bots aren't a problem because people don't spread
eachothers words all across bnet in non-context. they know it
kills activity. and ofcourse there's the element of
trust/friendship amongst most of us. the quoteparty ignores all
of this. quoteparty = effectively adding a guy in every st
channel who's out to make people look bad by misrepresenting
them or sharing what people say to their friends to the rest of
battle.net.
the part about bots is a fallacy if true anyway. if both bots
and quoteparty limit openess, and we got full controll over one
of them, we shouldn't remove it because the other will still be
there? ye ok. lets not even try to minimize the problem if we
can't absolutely eradicate it.

I'm for removing the quote party altogether.
Although the quotes are claimed to be randomly selected; they do
not follow a time pattern and also seems to always belittle
someone in some way.

I don't see how it can be argued that people feel less free to
express themselves because of the quote function given that the
quote function is simply an extension built entirely on
botlogging.
The only distinct feature of the quote function is that it
potentially makes a few lines of input from the logs more
available and accessible. If it is the case that people feel
they can't speak freely then the problem is the source -->
botlogging and not the retrieval and presentation of a few lines
from that source. We have to live with botlogging and it makes
no difference whether the quote function is there or not.
Given this, I think the arguments for removing it are weak at
best. Nevertheless, if everyone wants it removed I will of
course comply. Everyone does however not comprise local
brainwashens sent to the forum to do their masters' bidding. If
you can get a bunch more people to weigh in on the issue I'll
remove it depending on the results.

how about keeping the quote party if ''everyone wants it to keep
it''? this only seems fitting, as the arguements for the quote
party (apart from a reference to something trollpro said) don't
even exist. and ofcourse, shoop will decide if it was done
through brainwashing or not.
way to set impossible goals to reach. just get rid of the quote
already..

Also, if you're against the quote function you should also be
against Koala's youtube videos?
It's the same thing is it not? He records material and puts it
on youtube and thereby changes playing-style and people's
willingness to even play sheep tag in fear of being ridiculed?
We can bring up context here as well.
