Changes the way Admins and Moderators work.
DIR By: MrMan
Date: March 24, 2012, 2:49 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
This is a long read so read it or don't read it, but it is here
for your information.
Yesterday two new changes to the way admins and moderators work
were implemented; as a team we decided that these changes should
be shared with the community.
The first change relates to how we handle reports and I will
first explain the background to this. The procedure so far is
simply to handle each report as it comes in on a first come,
first served basis; as a result of this practice the majority of
reports do get handled but because we prioritise reports by
order this means that all reports are treated as equally
important even though the offence being reported may not be.
What this means for the players is that they may be having their
game severely disrupted by a serious rule breaker but they are
unable to gain assistance from the admins because they are
dealing with a very minor or possibly invalid report. This is
clearly not best practice and the admins hard work if often
times being wasted; in addition by placing the same importance
on minor or invalid reports we encourage players not to handle
some of the less important incidents themselves. An example of
this is "Griefing"; often a player will be Griefed one time,
instead of doing "Payback"they will report it without
hesitation. The same applies to minor cases of flaming where one
single insult will be made and it will lead to being reported
instead of being ignored as it should be.
This takes a great deal of time for the admins and often means
players who genuinely need help are being neglected through no
fault of the admins. This is a lose/lose situation for everyone
and leads to one of the main complaints made about admins by the
community.
From today we will now prioritise reports not by order but by
importance. Admins will now make an assessment of the reports
that have come in and make a decision about which one to take
first based upon how serious it is. This means if you are being
griefed by a griefer while you're building your house, you can
expect a faster response than if someone called you an asshole
after being killed. We will not ignore minor cases of rule
breaking but if there is a more serious incident we will take
that first; in addition if invalid reports are made, for example
reporting something that is not against the rules, the reporting
player can expect a warning for misuse of the report function,
or at least a conversation with an admin if it is someone who
doesn't yet know what the rules are.
The overall purpose of this is to make sure the admins have
enough time to do their job properly and to discourage some of
the excessive dependency some players have on the admins. Many
players report simply because they can, this change will
encourage players to think a little and ask themselves if that
perceived offence really requires admin intervention.
The second change is about the role of the moderator;
traditionally the moderator has been seen as a trial admin
however from today the moderator will have their own distinct
job that is separate from the admins. Moderators will still
enforce the rules as they're doing now and maintain the same
authority but their main job will now be to actively assist
players, especially new ones.
New players can be, through no fault of their own, a fairly
consistent problem. They join the server without knowledge or
understanding and proceed to break rules without knowing it;
often this leads to disruption of others and adds to the
hostility towards new players that currently exists. Our aim is
to encourage and guide new players into positive roles and away
from the sources of trouble, this will remove some of the
disruption towards the existing players and also encourage the
new player to stick with the game and enjoy it.
Many of the existing players already spend a great deal of time
helping others, you will recognise who some of them are when the
new moderators are announced later as that is one of the factors
we used to make a decision and it will be from now on. We hope
and encourage players to continue doing this and you will need
to be able to demonstrate this quality if you hope to join the
moderator team in the future.
The assistance moderators offer to new players will be
considerably more than just advice or answering questions;
moderators will be proactive and diligent in this area and will
actively work with new players meaning instead of just telling
them how to build a house and then leaving them to rulebreak,
they will join them and spend time with them making sure they
are settled in properly and understand how to proceed without
incident. Note: I have used the "Building a house" role as an
example; moderators will not guide anyone into any particular
role or recommend any role.
By doing this moderators will now be able to make early
assessments of risk and be able to identify the ones who join to
cause trouble, this means the Griefers will have been spotted
and dealt with by the moderators before they have had a chance
to disrupt your game. The positive side of their work is that
they will be helping the next generation of ShatteredCraft,
members enter the game and stay out of trouble. These benefits
help all of us by allowing you to play in peace, to reduce rule
breaking by new players allowing admins more time to assist the
community and it will help the new players enjoy the game and
stay out of trouble meaning they are more likely to stay. In
short, moderators will now become the gatekeepers of
ShatteredCraft.
Important note: moderators will still deal with reports but they
will make assisting new players and identifying and fixing early
problems their priority.
These changes are new for all of us and will take time and
effort to materialise properly, when you see a moderator Flying
around not answering your report respect what he is actually
doing for the community. When you report someone for calling you
an idiot and there is no response keep in mind that this means
the next time you are being attacked for no reason or having
your game ruined you are far more likely to get the assistance
you need.
Feel free to respond in this thread if you wish, if you have any
questions I will attempt to answer them as best as I can.
Thank you
MrMan

Perhaps a simple new MOTD for the group newcomers, explaining
the rules, and who to ask for information would come in handy.
The current Newcomer-->Member promotion system aids in this, as
tendentially members do know the rules well. Hence, you could
possibly give members the "task" of aiding proactively
Newcomers. This would easen up the work of Mods/Admins as well
as making the community less hostile towards Newcomers and, as
helpfulness and proactiveness are points taken in consideration
for ranking up to mod, im pretty sure that many people will
support this method. A simple "We encourage members to help out
newcomers, you might even earn Modship!" would probably do the
trick.

Yes... Though we could also make the spawn in a rules room...

Eh... Yeah... I guess thats a good idea...
Just as long as the moderator list isnt bigger than the members
list...

Well only the best would be chosen. And The best will be mods
already, so that for someone to enter the team he/she has to
"beat" the already existing ones.

Why dont you make a test for newplayers. To see that they read
the rules. then make a password on a door to unlock it?
