Saving a 109 2a SW

---------------------------------------------------------
Hello all!
As some of you may have seen, a 2a project was recently offered
in the for sale section, which I shamelessly jumped on as I've
been waiting patiently for the right thing to come along. Went
to see it this morning, and whilst it needs some some work, It's
decidedly achievable. I know, I know, wthless, but I was so
excited at the project I forgot to take any... btnghd They'll
follow when I go to get it rolling/collect. This will serve as a
build thread once I get to work. Plan is to do a rolling
restoration over the next couple of years, but she'll be put to
use lugging the odd water carrier around the yard, pulling the
harrow round the menage and towing the odd farrier out of the
ditch until she's ready for MOT day. Not going for concourse
shiny DBG restoration - more of a sensitive rebuild back to the
lovely working machine it was made to be and can be enjoyed as.
A lot of work to be done.
I haven't really got round the chassis in detail, but the front
looks OK, the rear a little suspect. Will need a new rear
crossmember at least, if not some chunks of rail letting in. The
bulkhead is the worst bit - there's not much left of it - and
I'll need some help from knowledgeable folks here, if I may:
It's a 2.6L model (did I forget to mention that? wdesmle ),
which I believe have different tunnel/bulkhead? I've done a
little research, but not come up with anything very definitive.
I've already sourced a slightly rotten but unmolested 2a 4
cylinder bulkhead, so I'm wondering which pieces I'll have to
carefully preserve from the tunnel area on the six cylinder
bulkhead to let into the other one along with the usual
footwells and pillars? Any guidance or a nudge in the right
direction welcome!
On the subject of the straight six... I've read a few threads
here and there. I understand they're cracking engines when
running well (if a little heavy on fuel, which I could care less
about). It would seem sacrilegious to deprive her of an unusual
factory fit engine, so that's what she's going to be sticking
with. Anyone got anything helpful hiding in their bookmarks
about the straight six? Parts supply, discussion, teardown,
workshop manual... Anything would be useful. I might pop a 2.25
in temporarily if I can find one cheap just to get her going
while I do a proper job on the six if it needs it. Just hoping
the sump isn't full of water and it's a wreck! I've got a good 4
cylinder box hiding in the garage that can be popped in to
enable this - I understand the bellhousing is different on the 6
pot box.
Steering box is.... crunchy. Luckily I have a good spare, along
with axles and many other bits from long years of hording for
this occasion. I didn't even bother to try and inspect the
swivels or axles closely. One thing that concerns me are the
sills. They're rotten. Can someone save me hours of research
trying to find unobtainium... Are they available anywhere? Are
they the same section as the normal ones, just longer?
Really looking forward to getting stuck into this :) More to
follow after initial tinkering. Very glad I passed my B+E test
last year so I can get it home! Sadly, the local place with a
lovely winch equipped beavertail is no more, though.
Cheers
Ian

Well done on taking on what looks like an epic project. Looking
forward to seeing the pics. Can't help you on the 6 pot versus 4
pot bulkhead as all my Landies have been 4 pots except for a
guvnor's 6 pot 109 that we used to haul the Harold the
crocodile's trailer. I do now that they burn exhaust valves if
not looked after. As we found out........

Harold the crocodile's trailer may need explaining! ;) I've read
about the exhaust valves - and idea what makes them burn out?
Thanks, it's certainly a project...

Well done on your new project.
I have just started a similar SW with some of the same problems
(rear cross member, sills etc)although my buklhead seems ok
apart from the footwells.
My car has the Westlake head on the 6 cylinder no doubt making
future parts purchases harder to make and more expensive.
I'm trying to upload pics but as you know it easy to forget!!

Cheers Toby, I remember reading your thread now. Your pics will
certainly be helpful! Where are you based? I've no idea exactly
what flavour of six pot mine has got yet... First job along with
the bulkhead will be to whip the head and sump off and take a
look, followed, no doubt, by drowning in a whole can of WD40.
The carb is a single Stromberg, which I'm well used to
rebuilding and tuning. They're lovely on my V8!
By the way, a handy tip for cheap WD40 is "maintenance spray"
from Euro Car Parts. It's about £3 a can! If you're using it by
the bucket load, you can't go wrong. It doesn't smell as nice as
WD, but does the job. The Pagid brake cleaner is also good and
literally cheaper than chips.

Have a look at my MANDY thread in this section.
6 pot bulkhead is quite different to a 4 pot, I think you might
better starting with a 6 pot version and repairing it possibly.

Thank you, that's just what I'm looking for. Looking at YRM, I
can get almost all the panels I'd need and they're not even a
lot of money, so maybe that's the best route. I'm heading over
there tomorrow to tinker, I'll get some pics

If I remember rightly, the 6 pot is a tight fit, making the
rearmost exhaust valves difficult to adjust so people didn't
bother. A recipe for a bunt-out valve.
