Watersports!
By: strang Date: December 23, 2013, 2:43 pm

Steady at the back! on a serious note, and having just seen
Hippydave's picture with the Canadian canoe on his motor, and,
remembering that Icy 'did' have a couple of kayaks, and I too
have a kayak, just wondered if there would be any interest in a
camping/paddling type weekend?
All I do with mine these days is just paddle on the local canal,
but would like to take it away somewhere to a nice bit of river
where I could camp alongside - does anyone know such a place,
and would anyone be interested in something like this?

The river Wye is a fantastic paddle for a few days with camping
in between, a pub stop at the saracens head at symonds yat, its
a very good weekend of mainly easy paddling, myself and Andy
(sourcers apprentice) have done it a few times now.

it's been many years since i last sat in a canoe (and i can't
swim) but the last time was actually on the Wye around Symonds
Yat, i do have a tatty old glass canoe and paddle (no spraydeck
or safety gear though), i'm by no stretch of the mind an
"experienced canoeist" (more a beginner) but i'm also not overly
afraid of water although i've never gone over particularly
turbulent water (we didn't get to the white water section around
Symonds)
i could very much be interested in a weekend of silly buggers on
water/wild camping, personally i prefer a little current to
still waters having canoed on both
maybe i ought to see if my canoe still floats if there's space
for another idiot and it doesn't conflict with other events i
plan on attending this coming year ;D
as long as you lot can cope with having an irritating novice
along please pencil me in
p.s.
it better be warm as me and cold don't get on well ;D

You wont need an old fiberglass kayak, i have access to some
very good plastic boats and all the safety gear and paddles
needed and i have my own kayak trailer that holds about 20
kayaks and a couple of canoes. Myself, Simon and Andy (sourcers
apprentice) are all experienced kayakers so we can handle
novices and the Wye is an easy river to paddle, even Symmons
Yat. Although i have had to rescue a few people who hire canoes
and tip them in the rapids with their wee kids on board.

Cheers Dave, i think it was one of the stubby plastic canoe
things i used on the Wye, i/it had absolutely no sense of
direction for the first ten minutes or so jwdrp
great fun although tiring if i recall correctly, i'm definitely
interested Rock

Novices are better with longer boats as are they are easier to
control and less prone to tipping. Before i take anyone on the
water they get a practice so i can see who i need to keep and
eye one and who needs to be given paddling practice as moving
water is totally different to still water paddling, and
everybody will get the obligatory river safety talk.

i understand and accept the need for instruction/assessment,
also understand the directional thing with lengths as the first
canoe i ever got in was a fabric covered timber framed job (i
think they're best looking but that may be just my visual taste)
that actually sat "in" the water rather than bobbed about like a
cork, i did get to play on the "step" in the river where the
current sped up learning to control the boat directionally so i
do have a little idea of the risks along with reasonable balance
my self preservation is also in a higher gear than it used to be
jwdrp
if you "think" i may be too old/stupid/unfit to play on the
water i'll accept that decision and just burn all the wood/drink
your beer ;D
p.s.
if you really want to play in strong multidirectional currents
may i suggest the entrance to Southampton with the tide rising,
it's scarey enough in a 30plus foot motorcruiser with twin
engines :o
