NFO515 Ex RAF 109SW

---------------------------------------------------------
Evening all, I thought I ought to put up a bit of a thread on my
project 109, as it may be of some interest.
This first bit is copied over from another post, apologies.
It is a 1961 build 109SW that was dispatched to the "Fighting
Vehicles Research and Development Establishment" as an
instrument vehicle and had a solid bulkhead between the front
seats and the back to block out light with blacked out windows
in the back. I don't know any further history of what it did
there, although I am going to try and get some information on
it. There are mentions of it being involved with the RAF and
there are stickers front and back with the military registration
number 91AA26, but this comes up as a "Land Rover Foamite Crash
Tender 1970" so I do wonder if the reg is correct for the
vehicle. If anyone has any suggestions for finding more of its
history, please let me know. The contract plate is missing.
Next time it turns up, it was sold by John Craddock in 1985 and
promptly went on an expedition in Iceland. I don't know if it
was demobbed in 1985 and this was the first time it was sold,
but that is the next bit of history I have.
After its little stint abroad, it was then sold to a member of
the LRO staff in 1990. It was featured in a few articles in LRO
then sold on. After this it passed a few owners and now me...
I'm sure there is more that I have missed, but I have left the
bag with the paperwork in, in the back of it at my mates house.
The plan...
The aim with the vehicle will be to keep it reasonably original.
Its been changed slightly from when it left the MOD, but is
still an interesting vehicle. The basic plan over the next few
months will be to get it read for MOT, then keep it as a rolling
restoration. The critical bits that need doing before the MOT
are; New B/C pillars, which I got with the vehicle, new
footwells, 2 patches on the chassis and a new dumb iron and
finally a new set of doors. The ones on it are holding up at the
moment, but behind the door cards, there isn't much steel left.
The plan is just to fit a new set and be done with it.
Once that's done and its on the road I'm hoping to bring it up
to a reasonable standard over the next few years. Its going to
have a coat of paint on it, I'm currently unsure what colour. If
I can find out what it was when in service, then that, if not
and it does turn out to have RAF ties, the it will probably be
satin RAF blue.
There is also some serious chassis work is looming on the
horizon. It will be ok for a few years, but is heavily patched
and will either need stripping down and welding properly, or
replacing.

It turned out that the military reg number on it was nothing to
do with the vehicle, but had been found written on the bottom of
one of the seats and a PO had thought it was cool, so had put it
on. After a short conversation with a guy by the name of Geoff
Fletcher, who was able to provide me with a couple of military
number plates it was on.
He says
"This vehicle was 27 EK 36 and was later struck off to the RAF
as 49 AS 60"
Unfortunatley apparently the RLC and the RAF museum don't have
the record cards for either of these numbers, so I won't know
exactly what it was doing, unless someone can suggest an
alternative method of finding it.
However, I did get some photos...

At the moment, I'm undecided what to do with it long term. The
idea that is playing round in my head is to get a spare pair of
rear sides to recreate it back to as close as I can get it to
the pictures, and then paint it up to look real smart for shows,
but allow the spare sides to be swapped in, and the panels over
the doors easily removed so that it can be used as a 109SW
easily as well.
Short term, its going to get a few patches, some new rear door
frames and an MOT. Slightly longer term, its going to be used as
a test bed for a special 2.5 petrol that I'm building.
Not a lot has been done since I bought it, I'm currently buying
new bits, then planning on having a good run at ti when the
weather is warmer.
Cheers
Andrew

Was wondering when you'd do a thread on it :) Its an interesting

going to the trouble of blanking off the windows

Cheers for all the comments guys, I'm really pleased with it!
The only problem is I set out to buy a bitsa, but this is a bit
too nice for me! I may have to start counting some rivets...
