CZ to Leafers - punitive expedition!
       By: 1960SeriesII Date: January 14, 2016, 3:53 am

...and you thought your repeated incursions will remain
       unpunished ;D
We are in the middle of a protracted planning session for a big
trip to the UK at the end of August - we'd like to drive to
Ijmuiden close to Amsterdam, take the DFDS Seaways ferry to
Newcastle and travel a few days along the Hadrian's Wall and
then down through North Pennines or Lake District and Yorkshire
Dales to Wakefield. We want to squeeze as much as possible into
the two weeks we have set aside for this.
It would be great to hear tips for places/lanes to visit during
our time in the UK in August. We will be travelling in Robur,
our S2A FC, with our kids and JRT's, and a friend is taking his
       Minerva along.
We'd like to travel west from Newcastle towards
Heddon-on-the-Wall, take the old military road along the
Hadrian's Wall towards Greenhead and then move south towards
either North Pennines or Lake District, whichever offers more to
see. Does anyone know of a cheap camping site somewhere in the
area between Carlisle and Greenhead? Any lanes that could be
recommended in North Pennines, Lake District or Yorkshire Dales?
We are not looking for offroad excitement/slippery rock crawling
extravaganza, but rather some easy-going lanes or smaller roads
       with nice views.
We thought of doing some short trips around Wakefield while we
stay at LATP (if time/energy allows, NCM looks like a nice place
to stay on its own), probably down to Kirklees Light Railway and
possibly Yorkshire Sculpture Park at Bretton Hall.
After LATP we'd probably be heading northeast towards Howardian
Hills & North York Moors. We'd probably stop over at York to see
the cathedral and move towards Scarborough and Whitby. Anything
you would recommend we should see up that way?
Many thanks for any tips you might have, I'm still a bit worried
something might get in the way, but we've never been closer to
actually getting to the UK (and back) in one of our leafers.
       Wish us luck.
PS - I've made preliminary map of the route below, if you want
to take a peek - obviously the priority isn't to pass all the
nice places, but I haven't quite made up my mind which to visit,
so the westernmost side of the route simply goes straight
through between Lake District and North Pennines/Yorkshire
       Dales:

I can't recommend routes or lanes but two real places of
       interest.
1/2 day at national photographic and tv museum.
Full day - Yorkshire sculpture park, it's spread over many many
acres and you still won't see everything.
       Hope this helps a little
       Steve

Yorkshire Sculpture Park is already on the list, looks like a
great place to explore. The TV museum might be interesting as
well, will look it up. Thanks.

Hope you make it, Jan, can sort you out with some easy lanes in
the Yorkshire dales, would be able to come with you, plenty of
       good campsites available whoo

Great stuff Jan! Howarth and the Keighley and Worth Valley
Railway (see the film "The Railway Children") is not a bad day
out and not a million miles away. LATP is just great on its own!
Can't wait to meet you after all these years!

Good plan Jan! About time you made it over here. As Ian says I
am sure we could come with you on some green lane tours, and
       maybe all camp together etc.
Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, whilst not a museum is worth
calling into, and we may be able to arrange a visit to a well
known Land Rover restorer (but I will keep quiet about that).
If you are stuck for somewhere to stay I am sure we could
probably squeeze you into our place too if needs be.
And finally - you can have a pint of proper Yorkshire beer!

       hair restoration creams Mark .....
Agreed 'Uddersfield Landrover center is worth a looksy though if
only for a laugh at the prices ;-)

Cambridgeshire is too far south for us, NCM would be about the
southernmost point we plan to visit whstle
Mark, Ian, it would be great if we could agree on dates to go
out and do some lanes. We've just looked at some old LRO
brochure with a 4.4-mile long Weardale to Teesdale lane, said to
be the highest road in England, sounded very nice, but I
struggled to find it on the maps - local help would be much
       appreciated!
We would have most time available during the weekdays before
LATP starts, but don't want to take you too far out from where
you live just to meet up with us!
Mark, careful about the offer of putting us up, we'd be 3
adults, 2 kids and 2 dogs PIIeee
