Knowledge is defined as facts, information, and skills acquired
through experience or education; the theoretical or practical
understanding of a subject. In philosophy, the study of
knowledge is called epistemology. Knowledge acquisition involves
complex cognitive processes: perception, communication, and
reasoning.

There is a subtle difference between data and information. Data
are the facts or details from which information is derived.
Individual pieces of data are rarely useful alone. For data to
become information, data needs to be put into context.

Knowledge refers to the awareness or understanding on the
subject acquired from education or experience of a person.
Information is nothing but the refined form of data, which is
helpful to understand the meaning. On the other hand, knowledge
is the relevant and objective information that helps in drawing
conclusions.

Knowledge: Information and skills acquired through experience or

Information is ones and zeros. It’s raw data, or a list of
facts. It’s instructions on filling out a business license, or
the instructions Google provides when you sign up for Adwords.
The obvious stuff. You can often acquire information for free:
Go to the Associated Press for raw, un-analyzed news. Or read a
‘how to’ on building your own car.

People often use the terms interchangeably, without knowing the
fact that there are slight and subtle differences between
information and knowledge. These two are important concepts of
knowledge management system, wherein the former means processed
data about someone or something, while the latter refers to
useful information gained through learning and experience.

Understanding the different forms that knowledge can exist in,
and thereby being able to distinguish between various types of
knowledge, is an essential step for knowledge management (KM).
For example, it should be fairly evident that the knowledge
captured in a document would need to be managed (i.e. stored,
retrieved, shared, changed, etc.) in a totally different way
than that gathered over the years by an expert craftsman.
Over the centuries many attempts have been made to classify
knowledge, and different fields have focused on different
dimensions.
