SPONSOR'S COMPETITION
DIR By: Baloo
Date: March 12, 2019, 1:05 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Sponsor's competition - Sunday 14th April 2019
This is a handicap competition that is new for 2019. It is open
to all current SDPL members (players who were registered for the
2018/19 season on 11th March 2019) but is limited to a maximum
of 64 players.
When is it?
The competition date is Sunday 14th April, starting at midday.
How much?
Entry is £5 if paid on or before Friday 12th April, or £7 if
paid afterwards. To secure your place in the competition, give
your entry fee to any of the committee, or pay into the league's
bank account ensuring that the reference is your name and "SC"
(your captain will have account details).
As part of our sponsorship agreement with Rayleigh Lanes, this
competition will have guaranteed winner's prize of £250 donated
by Rayleigh Lanes. All other entry fees collected will be
returned in prize money shared among runners up and a plate
competition for those who are knocked out of the main
competition early.
Format
Games will be played under "Pickaball" rules - which in summary,
allows both players to take a number of balls off the table
following the break. The number of balls that can be removed is
based on the player handicap, which in turn is based upon player
averages. Full rules will be posted in a separate thread.
The initial stages of the competition will be a round-robin
competition, the exact format of which depends on the number of
participants. Following the round-robin stages, the players who
do not progress to the main competition will compete in the
plate competition.

Pickaball Rules
In summary, this is a normal game of pool apart from one or both
players get an opportunity to remove balls from the table
immediately following the break.
The winner of the lag decides who is to break.
Starting the game
Step 1 - The breaker breaks as normal
Step 2 - The non-breaking player takes their number of balls off
the table
Step 3 - The player that broke takes their number of balls off
the table
Step 4 - The game continues as per normal blackball rules (i.e.
it’s an open table)
Any ball(s) may be removed apart from the black or white and
must be removed from play - e.g. dropped into a pocket. Players
do not have to take their full allocation off the table of they
wish: they can even decline to take any balls. In the interests
of keeping the games flowing, each player has one minute to
decide which balls to remove.
If a foul break is committed (no balls are potted and two balls
do not completely pass the half-way line) and the next player
requests a re-rack, the player who committed the foul break
still picks second following the subsequent break.
If the breaking player fouled on the break then the next player
has a free shot after Pickaball.
The number of balls is determined before the tournament begins
and is intended to reflect players’ skill levels. The table
below shows the maximum number of balls a player may take, based
upon their SDPL individual points average and division after
week 20 of the 2018/19 season.

Congratulations to Mark Sutherland who won the main competition
by beating James Moore 4-3 in the final, and also to Darren
Ditzel who beat someone called Martin Attwood in the final of
the "best of the rest" competition for those who didn't make it
past the first stage.
