       By: R Cooney Date: May 5, 2017, 10:40 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
i understand there is carp 'pox' at alder - per on site advice
       today
       1) do we have to do anything individually - like extra
       disinfecting etc etc plse ?
       2) presumably this 'kyboshes' the plans to transfer carp to
north lake at twin lakes - even though the netting was aborted
this week at alder will transfer be stopped ?
       many thanks

reply to my own post -after a bit of research
according to the ea site this cyprinid disease -more unsightly
than horrifically damaging- can be contagious to other cyprinids
ie bream , other carp, rudd and crucians
as i am far from being knowledgeable on this disease i ask the
obvious question...are the club really going to risk even one
fish possibly incubating this disease put in north lake with
its easy access into the south lake's expensive big carp ???

This was reported to the biologist that carried out the initial
health check, I have copied his reply below:
"The infection is actually caused by cyprinid herpesvirus-1. The
condition causes characteristic white waxy lumps on the skin and
fins, which are easily observed with the naked eye. Although
they may look unsightly, they have little effect on the host
fish. It has only very rarely been recorded as causing any
significant problems apart from the unappealing look of the
lesions. These lesions disappear as the water temperature rises,
leaving clear, apparently undamaged skin behind. However, once
infected, fish may develop the characteristic lumps year after
       year."
Further, he advised that there is no issue in continuing with
       the transfer of fish.
That said, as we are now into the warm weather and spawning
season, the stock transfer will be put on hold.

It is certainly possible that transmission will occur if
infected fish are introduced. The lesions can also cause
problems with secondary infection, which is something not to
risk if fish are financially valuable, but usually pox is just
an aesthetic issue. I don't know many who'd knowingly engaging
in transfer of infected stock with any disease, but the weighing
up of the pros and cons are a management issue. With the virus
being so very common it is possible some carp in the South Lake
       are already carriers anyway.
