You know what it really is don't you Janet ... it's the "keeping
up with the Joneses" theory. One little child has a birthday,
you know just a plain old birthday at home, with a home baked
cake just plain frosting and candles, pin the tail on the
donkey, musical chairs and a "thank you for coming" comment as
they leave. The kids go home and the moms ask "so what was it
like" ... "oh you mean they didn't get a decorated cake from the
bakery" ... "what no bounce house or ponies to ride on while
there", you mean they didn't give you a cute little goodie bag
for being there, well when it's your birthday we'll show them.
Then your basic birthday party which I'm sure kids enjoy just as
much turns into the $2000 birthday, prizes for every game
played, goody bags that look like they could be going home with
the winners at the Oscars, cakes that are 4 layers (some bigger
than wedding cakes), performers that you need to book months in
advance ... and for what "my kids birthday was better than
hers". It's whats helped to make things so wrong in this day
and age (yup I know I sound old, but we've all probably been
there at some point. I was a single mom, living on a very
limited income when my daughter was little and even I felt the
pressure to up the ante a few times, but when I ask my daughter
today what birthday she remembers most as being her favorite it
was the one I had at home, outside ... a home baked cake with
fronting and sprinkles, silly games like red/light green/light,
musical chairs and the handpainted photo backdrop that I made
with a face cutout for the girls to have their pictures done
with, I painted the body of a princess with flowers and trees on
the side of them, they loved it. Goody bags didn't exist that
day, but they did get a copy of the photo when I had them
developed. The kids loved it, it was the cheapest birthday I
had ever thrown and the fun level was real.
I say ... if you don't want to make those overly decorated
goodie bags, by all means don't ... and it won't be the kids
that are disappointed, nope if anyone is it'll be the moms who
are overly indulging their kids.
OK ... stepping off my little soapbox now. LOL

Man Tania...when you get rolling...you get rolling.
But you hit the nail on the head. What is UP with our society
and the inability to accept others and their situation! Sheesh!

As I'm sure most of you have gathered money has been
unbelievably tight at my home the past 2-1/2 years and I can't
believe it could get worse but it has the past 6 months. My DD
preschool is EXTREMELY important to me and I spend every dime I
have to keep her enrolled 2 days per week. Although my family
and my DH family are very close to us I would never ask for
money from anyone.
With all of that said, our normally parties are a homemade cake,
plastic table covers, regular plates and a BBQ. With her
turning 5 I really want to invite all of her preschool friends
over. Our house is small and a little bit off the beaten path.
I'm really hoping that her school mate come. I don't mind that
I can't keep up with the Jones but I really hate the way people
make me feel that I don't spend a month salary on my DD b-day
party.
Her party is going to be a cupcake theme. I bought some cute
cupcake wrapper, cupcake plates (regular and cake size) and
cupcake napkins for $9 total. I'm making the cupcakes and
decorating some beforehand but I'm going to leave some
undecorated and let the kids decorate their own. This will be a
fun activity with no prize and no extra cost (free). I’m making
the decorations using scrappy supplies (free). I'm going to
make the invites myself too (free). All I need to do is pick up
the food (my main cost) and a few table covers.

other people think! Your daughter will love it and that is all

Jessica cupcake party awesome my great neice loves them we
started them when she was 3 and she turned 6 yesterday always
wants a cupcake party so be ready for next year LOL My sister n
law always made fancy sprinkles and sugars she loved it

I don't think we all do it because of what someone else says.
You know I'm one of those mom's who likes to go all out for
Birthdays, I can afford them thankfully at them moment, however,
I have never spend more than $200.00 tops on a party, and that's
because I have a mother who loves to play the guilt card and
makes me invite my whole family and she is one of 8 I have 13
cousins all married with children and we are all close. I make
everything from scratch, the food, the decorations, the cakes I
do it all. I love making parties, I love to celebrate Life and
that is what a birthday is the celebration of life, even when I
was a single mom struggling every day, I made sure to celebrate
my kids birthday (it was harder but I did it).
I love seeing my dd and son with a smile on their face I have
never done it because of the Joneses, because I could care less
what they have to say, I do it for ME so much more than for the
kids. With Natalie she is so blessed that has a Godfather who
pays for all the parties I have given her (the places where I
have them)/. Daniel loves to celebrate his birthday by the
pool, making a BBQ with his friends. Monica after she turned 12
she stopped having parties because she does not like birthday
parties so we take her out to dinner. It broke my heart when
she turned 15 this year and refused to have a party, because I
had been planning for it for years, saved for it and she did not
want anything. So we are taking the money and going on a 7 day
cruise.
So in my case I LOVE LOVE LOVE my parties, I will continue to
have every detail, I will continue to spend my nights baking
cakes and cooking until I'm so old I can't do it anymore, but I
will always celebrate. Even if I'm broke no money (I've been
there almost lost the house) I will still have something good to
celebrate and I will make sure I do.
And wait until you see what I have planned for Daniels
Graduation, DH is going to shoot me.... But I'm going all out
with a budget of $250.00 and about 60 people. ;D

Oh Diana...yes there are the few that just LOVE to throw a
party! I guess we shouldn't over generalize...lesson learned!

Diana ... my comments weren't meant to insult anyone elses
choices regarding parties, and how they celebrate etc. It was
just to state that it can be done, cheaply and well with all the
kids being excited and happy about the whole thing. I've just
found in my experiences that many of the moms make it all about
how much better their party is than the last one their child has
gone too. I've done a few big parties for my daughter when she
was younger, some of them were at special locations with theme
park type rides etc., I just found that the kids enjoyed any
party I gave, at home or away ... prizes or no prizes, big
cakes, little cakes or cupcakes, handmade decorated goodies or
baggies filled with candy ... it's all about having fun. If
your family loves a party ... then that's all that matters and
by all means party on.
Jessica, I think your party sounds very sweet and perfect for
your daughter and her friends. Kids at that age don't know what
things cost, they don't really know the difference between
homemade or store bought ... as long as they are together and
having fun it'll be a great party. Do what you like best
without worrying about it, the kids will love whatever you do.

Tania, very little upsets me, trust me, I know what you are
talking about. I live that with my sister and good friend. My
sister is the Jones, but she can afford what ever, but my friend
get's in debt for a party just because she has to live up to
someone else expectations.
But there are some nut balls like me who loves parties. I
wanted a big one for my 50th and my sister would not do it
because she says I'm too old,,,What.. :o :o :o :o :o I'm not
old, so now next year I'm giving myself a nice birthday party
with my bfffffffffs...lol and my sister who happens to be my
best fffff... is not invited... :o ;D
no worries my friend.
Jessica, your party sounds great, When Nati turned 5, I had hot
dog and the kids wrapped them with homemade dough, they had so
much fun, I bought paper bags and had them decorate them they
had a great time. Godfather paid for a Cinderella to come and
paint their faces, but they kids said they most fun was
decorating the bags and wrapping the hot dogs.
