If we want to avoid our first 20-loss season in a long time, we
have to win the NCAA Tournament. Let's gooooooo.
It feels like UNCW is playing third fiddle to Hofstra and
Charleston in the conference. In games at their place, they've
lost by 24 and, just recently, 32 points. Back when UNCW hosted
Charleston, and lost by just two, it was believed that they'd be
C of C's biggest challenger for the tournament bid, but I'd
probably put them fourth behind the aforementioned two as well
       as Towson.
I feel like we saw the worst version of UNCW when they played
here. Take away Harden-Hayes' 31 points (yes, that's a lot to
take away) and the offense was just atrocious – just 13 for 41
from the floor, 0 for 9 from three. MHH hit four threes in two
minutes to turn an even game into a double digit lead for the
Seahawks, yet we came all the way back to tie it. They pulled
away at the end at the free throw line and on a couple big
buckets from White. They're a solid team; I just don't know if
they have the juice to get buckets when they have to. Every game
feels like it's this rock fight.
There was a little buzz around White when UNCW was rolling. He
had 19 points in games are North Carolina and Oklahoma, and he
was putting up some real nice defensive numbers too. I had
wondered whether he was this dude, even after his nearly
invisible five-point night here, but he's been impressive of
late, hitting for at least 20 in four of the last five games.
The lone exception was a curious one – 8 points, zero rebounds,
in that 32-point loss to Charleston. He also no-showed in the
Hofstra loss – 3 points, 3 rebounds. Very peculiar. The jury's
still out for me. He's not a dead-eye shooter, but will do
damage from the mid-range and by scoring inside.
For UNCW, defense is often what leads to some easy buckets. If
you recall, Roberts was pulled after two ghastly turnovers as
Thomas pressed up on him. It feels like they always have that in
their back pocket when they need it. We had just the 11
turnovers last game, but the 11-point advantage in points off
turnovers happened to the final margin of the game.
This week, we're walking into gyms that have the two highest
attendance marks in the league. Charleston's at 4,571 while UNCW
pulls in at 4,010. That would put them sixth and seventh in the
14-team Atlantic 10 Conference – far more challenging an
environment than we were used to in the AE, save for maybe
Vermont. For reference, not that we're looking too hard at
what's happening in the AE, but five of the nine teams – the
same five as usual – average under 1,000 fans a game.
I see UNCW winning this, but I'd be surprised if they did it
going away. We're two teams who lack offensive flow and
generally show up defensively, not to mention UNCW will be
playing for the three seed on Senior Day on Saturday against
Towson (the difference between Drexel and A&T in the first round
of the CAAs). Some games I just can't see a path to victory, but
I feel like we can slow the pace and, if we knock down some
shots, can surprise them here. Thirteen feels like an awful lot.

The last game against UNCW was close. Hoping to keep it close
late and see what happens. Fitz emergence of late has this team
looking more like they did starting out 3-0. Limit turnovers
take good 3s play solid defense could pull out a win over some
teams. Want to see Policelli do some more post ups felt he was
just around the arc all of last game.

agreed. could also be exhaustion. this team has run 7-9
players generally for most of the year, with limited subbing.
that's gotta weigh on the team when opponents usually run 10 or
       so.
also- some of our minutes are going to players that were already
injured. that could be nagging. depth counts!

Great preview Checkmate. Doesn't feel like we have a guy to
guard a 6'7" wing like MHH. Should be Policelli but he seems to
do better defensively down low nowadays. 6'7" feels like a big
ask for TSM. In Hofstra's post game presser, Speedy said the
difference in the game was when they put Dstone Dubar (6'8") on
TSM in the last 4 minutes. He felt like the size bothered TSM.
       Hopefully we find a way!

i agree! posecki is too valuable in the paint with his newfound
dominance on the boards. and that's even if our taller forwards
are on with him. GO SB

Interesting Vegas has us as only 10 point underdogs tonight.
Maybe were getting a little respect off of the close contest
with Hofstra? Or maybe UNCW has an injury. Kenpom still has us
as 13 point underdogs. Would we be stupid not to take UNCW -10
       tonight?

Like the early decision to post-up Fitz, but the guard play
needs to clean itself up, and avoid these needless TO’s. Sarvan
comes in, shoots a bomb, and is just a total liability on D.

you do a really good job with these game previews. They are
better than anything the athletic department puts out. Heilbron
and Emerich just dont seem to get it.
