Hofstra has tiptoed ever so closely to being in the at-large
discussion, but I still think they fall short, even if they win
their last two games and lose in the conference tournament
final. You just can't hang your hat on wins over Iona,
Charleston and San Jose State and expect to be taken seriously
by the committee, not when power conference teams have regular
opportunities to score a Quad 1/2 win, especially in these
conference tournaments, when such victories have a way of
reverberating. In Hofstra's favor, they have 11 wins away from
home, and nine true road wins. Charleston's the marquee one.
Working against them though? The CAA has been bad and a lot of
those road wins are against the dregs of Division I.
On another note, I wonder how this rivalry will develop. It
would be quite something if, every year, it felt like it had
real postseason and recruiting implications. Will Suffolk County
catch the fever and pack the house tomorrow night? Hofstra did
just that and treated the home faithful to a clinic earlier this
month, led by Thomas, who's the cold-blooded shooter/scorer that
we really could have used. For them to dismantle us without
Estrada was impressive, and they've continued to impress.
Hofstra's not only won nine straight games (fourth longest
streak in the country) but the last five have been by double
digits, and in that nine-game stretch, six wins have been by
15+. Charleston was the one that grabbed the headlines early,
but if Hofstra hasn't passed them already, they're right on
       their tail.
Everybody looks at Estrada and Thomas as this elite backcourt –
and justifiably so – but look at what Carlos has done recently.
       2/4 vs Stony Brook: 4 pts, 10 rebs, 10 asts, 4 stls
       2/8 at Northeastern: 10 pts, 9 rebs, 9 asts, 1 stl
       2/11 at Monmouth: 6 pts, 8 rebs, 7 asts
       2/13 vs Drexel: 3 pts, 5 rebs, 5 asts, 3 stls
       2/16 vs Hampton: 3 pts, 10 rebs, 8 asts, 3 stls
The assist numbers are just awesome – almost eight a night over
that stretch. He's got shooters all over and he's finding them.
But to then be active on the glass and on the defensive end,
Hofstra really has itself a gem, and he and Estrada make for a
devastating playmaking combo. Who wouldn't want to play with
       them?
If we're to have any chance, we can't go up and down the floor
with them. I recall last year thinking we would get demolished
by Hofstra at our place but I couldn't have been more wrong.
With our injuries, the chasm between us in terms of talent and
execution seems more significant this time. We were outclassed
in our prior meeting, and the only change of note will be that
the reigning conference player of the year will be on the floor.
I'd love to see another stunner, but these are two programs
going in the opposite direction, one with a major carrot out in
front of it, and the other just playing out the string. I give
our guys credit for competing baseline to baseline, night in and
night out. Unfortunately, tenacity alone won't cut it.

Worth noting that TSM didn't play in the last game vs Hofstra.
Got to the one at Hofstra. Thought our size bothered them a bit
with Sarvan, Fitz, and Policelli all scoring in double figures.
We just had no wing to guard Thomas. Figure with TSM back he'll
       have either Thomas or Estrada.
Another interesting thing I noticed, Jeff Bernstein tweeted a

       n
the court in uniform. Wonder if there is a world where those two
could come back for a few games or the tournament and still use
       their medical red shirt.

That would be an interesting development but I think Medical
redshirt requires the player to be out for the year, but maybe
it has something to do with games played?

after a 5-0 hof start, it's 33-27 SB at half. hof wont pass the
ball and insists on missing outside shots, even the good looks.
tobyO with 5 boards and 2 assists in only 10min. fitz looks
good under (skyhooks anyone?) and threenan hit a crucial 3/3 in
       one trip to the stripe.
i always assumed my favorite all-time player was warney, but
maybe it's TSM. not bad against 14-2 hof.

Per Pav, TSM, Policelli, and Petway all honored on Senior Day,
but all 3 eligible to come back for 1 more season. It’ll be
interesting to see if they stay and how this plays out with
       Ford’s final contract year.
