If nearly picking us off at their place a month ago didn't get
our attention, Monmouth's recent play has to have.
Three wins in 10 days, all against middle of the pack CAA teams,
and this is after a stretch where they really challenged the
league's brass, C of C and UNCW. They were totally down in the
dumps, but I expect to get all we can handle tomorrow night.
So what's been the difference? Rice has said that they're
"out-teaming" people, letting the sum of their parts outpoint
the potentially superior individual play from the opposition.
And that's probably true, but it's been more than that. Allen's
emerged as their lead horse, averaging 18 points a night during
their three-game win streak. And his game is a microcosm for
what Monmouth's all about – getting the ball inside, getting
higher-percentage looks even if they aren't being made with the
kind of frequency that normally correlates with that range.
Monmouth has taken only 359 threes in 24 games, putting them in
the bottom 10 nationally for 3PA/FGA (26.9%). By comparison,
we're 16th nationwide for percentage of threes taken (592;
46.2%) yet we're 325th in percentage (.305). [emoji51]
You have to give Rice credit for holding things together. He
does not have a bonafide scorer, they don't have a single player
shooting over 30% from three, and they've pieced it together
with a very young team, including a former walk-on, to show some
signs of life.
I'll humor you with a postseason look. We're in a precarious
position we find ourselves in after starting the conference
season 3-1. There are seven teams with either three or four
wins, with the goal being at least to get out of the 12/13
matchup in the conference tournament. What's working against us
is that gauntlet at the end of the year – home to Hofstra, and
then at UNCW and Charleston – which means that we'll need to do
some damage over the next two weeks at home with dates against
Monmouth, A&T and William & Mary. The other side of me says,
hey, it'd be nice to get a conference tournament win by knocking
off a fellow bottom dweller. [emoji848]
Obviously the talk this week has been more about our future than
the games remaining. What do we do with Geno? I think if you
polled people, it'd be hard to find much support for him. And
the injuries – the likes of which we've never seen before I'd
say – make the situation cloudier than it should be. There's a
scenario where we're in the top four or five in conference with
everybody healthy. Who wouldn't have signed up for that in year
one in the CAA? But instead the injuries happen and we have this
stale year on the heels of the exodus last year, the COVID year
with the early AE tournament exit, and the disappointment in
2019 losing to Hartford. Even going back to the previous season,
how the hellllll did we lose that game to South Florida? Mind
boggling. If we win tomorrow night, he's 56-56 for us all time,
and 32-30 in conference. That's ... pretty average. And it's
hard to rationalize a contract extension, presumably with a
raise, with a C on your report card IMO. America East teams like
UNH, Lowell, Maine, etc, have long tolerated .500-or-worse
basketball but we should not look the other way.

Big game tn need to get a few wins to stay out of the play in.
Without TSM not great chance to avoid that.

first rounder against bingo.

This is the biggest game of the year, IMO. A win will gives us
the edge for a 7 or 8 seed; a loss, means we will be fighting to
not finish 12 or 13.
Given how well Monmouth has been playing of late, if TSM doesn't
suit up (not likely based on Geno's comment last week), we will
be hard pressed to come up with a win tonight.

I can count maybe less than 10 students in the crowd tonight.

Two bad teams little administration push for attendance. But the
student demographics itself is a massive barrier heavy commuter
and international student base bad mix.

Toby definitely needs to be tempered. Missed 3 layups in 1st
half that all should have been finished. I cringe every time
Roberts handles ball too.

Policelli having 4 fouls 5 minutes into the second half is gonna
be too much too overcome.
