I am back from my 30-day sentence from the Chairman. Are you
going to work with me and allow me to speak the truth, or do I
have to start my own Forum? We can all play nicely in the
       sandbox or not. Your call.

       Our Moment
       Stony Brook University's Strategic Plan
At just 66 years old, Stony Brook University has the rare
distinction of being one of the youngest universities to stand
tall alongside long-established institutions of higher learning.
From our beginnings as a small school in a muddy potato field,
we ascended quickly, building a top-tier public research
institution and hospital over the span of just a few decades.
Stony Brook University’s legacy rests in our persistence to defy
       the odds.
Now, we are designated as a flagship State University of New
York (SUNY) institution, recognized as the #1 ranked public
university in New York State by U.S. News & World Report, and a
member of the American Association of Universities (AAU). SBU is
clearly hitting its stride as a leader among its academic peers.
We stand ready for our future with wind in our sails. Both New
York State and the SUNY system are demonstrating a recommitment
to SBU and higher education in general. Recent examples include
$100 million in capital funding for research labs to invest in
new and renovated buildings, labs, and state-of-the art
instrumentation; an endowment match of up to $500 million in
       state funds for SBU and the three other SUNY university centers;
and $200 million in digital transformation and IT infrastructure
across SUNY, including Stony Brook University.

82 minute presentation on SB's future strategic plan from the
       provost.
  HTML https://youtu.be/oSesfX8q9iM?t=455
-the vision is clear: innovation, and inclusive excellence (in
ed, research, healthcare, eco/cultural development, social
       mobility)
-around 9min, discussion on public vs private, we have work to
do, and making SB a destination and not a backup school, student
retention, losing faculty to "better" schools, etc. Expanding
       our reach past LI/NYC
-14.30 briefly mentions sports and women's lax, room to grow,
but quickly pivoted to the arts and social mobility, wants to
double down on access and equity in the next 5 years
-around 18min, more on equity, need more investment, more
policies and procedures, is SB a "community"?
       -21.40 priorities: teaching/learning, research, serving
communities, reimagining the way we work
-34.50 supporting teacher prep (recall that SB originally was a
       teacher's college)
-36.30 students enroll because they are nearby, we need to
institute culture and a vibrant community, its a challenge, we
need students to want to be here. Students need a better
experience, they dont think they'll have fun on campus
-38min we've made big strides lately; we need to get a place
where when SB is in the news, it's expected. suggested we
should be the "university of NY" (which i've long thought!). we
are a hidden gem but the word is getting out
-42.20 facilities need work, long way to go. need to
upgrade/innovate technology and infrastructure, have a new CIO
-46min we should be less reliant on state funding
-around 55.10, student question about the alumni network and the
U being a stepping stone; and the answer is we have to give
students an experience that transforms them. we can't convince
students of affinity; it has to be earned
-1.00.00 audience question, do students have physical community?
do they want to stay on weekends, or just leave on the train?
this is the essential problem at SB. provost said this also
applies in southampton, he saw two presentations this week on
this, we should get a bronze wolfie (didnt i suggest that?),
traditions matter, eSports teams helps, we need a facility for
students to congregate. we have a new provost starting soon, we
have to be creative, ask the state for more (1 building per year
       is not enough)
-around 1.03.50, it's expensive to live around SB and attend
       school
-student question around 1.09.56 about the alumni network,
should use harvard's platform as a model, student wants a
       refresher on the alumni directory
-student question around 1.14.50 about whether we have resources
for specialized student needs, perhaps in the international
       student context

Interesting that “equity” is such a buzzword in 2023. White
students are the clear minority and female students outnumber
male students at SB. What equity and inclusion problems are they
       still trying to address?

Around the 28 minute mark, President Mcinnis talks about the
football opening night attendance and how happy she was with it.
She also says “no matter weather we win or lose, don’t
misunderstand me we prefer to win - the success is in building
communitie and that opening night was a wonderful example of
       what we’re building”
Not for nothing but the game was sold out, but the athletic dept
gave high school football teams free tickets which I think
played a big part of the attendance. What we’re building right
now with football is a losing culture

good work NYR! i gave a listen too.
0.00-4.30: the first few minutes is all about how gigantic the
past year was, and it certainly was. flagship, simons gift,
       USNWR, hospital, climate exchange, etc.
5.30-10.30: pandemic struggles, state funding, cost-cutting,
       revenues, Simons' gift
10.30-12.45: simons' gift is unrestricted. their first gift was
in 1983, for $750. endowment is $400m, the smallest of any
large research U. added $1b in just 7 years. need $200m more.
       13.30-17.00: climate exchange
18.00-20.20: stony awards, revenues (albany, growth, priorities,
       healthcare)
21.26-26.00: future plans, equity, mobility, recent graduates
       making better salaries, etc.
26.50-28.45: feedback to strengthen community, unity, tradition,
and spirit. Student Affairs implemented the Places and Spaces
Concept, to promote physical connection, new Club Hub student
lounge, events, etc. CAA membership, 2 championships, 313
students on honor roll, this is part of building community,
focused on 11k sellout at opening FB game.
28.54-33.21: reputation, advancing research, academic planning,
societal impact, need to invest in certain areas to enhance
reach/reputation. priority is to attract faculty and provide
resources. need to foster culture of innovation, new CIO, etc.
33.21-46.00: some faculty praise, mostly in the sciences,
research initiatives, etc. Around 39.30 interesting project to
       "manufacture clouds" to counteract climate change.  endowment;
       we need more money!
46.00: recap. awards, scholars, hospital, state funding &
       matches, enrollment up, etc.

  HTML https://www.sbstatesman.com/2023/10/15/back-to-campus-a-chat-with-stony-brook-transfer-students/
i listened to this Statesman audio clip where they interviewed 3
students on campus, all happened to be transfers. directly from
the students- the theme was the same- it's hard to make friends.
people dont meet people. they dont feel part of the school.
it's hard for commuters. club meetings are too late. students
are anti-social, don't interact with each other. not welcoming
to transfers and commuters. too much traffic, club meetings are
too late, everything takes too long, etc. what's most important
is to socialize, everyone feels alone, no one to talk to.
in fact- the interviewer was also a transfer, and also felt
       alone when arriving on campus.
