on a positive note- here's some improvement and good efforts on
the part of the U (albeit a small, small step):

some feedback from a new student:
Welcome Week was dull for me. Every freshman had to
attend mandatory events or else they would get an orientation
hold on SOLAR. Eating at the dining hall, rather than my own
dinner table, was jarring. You must have your Student ID card
swiped through a machine when you want to eat at any of the
dining locations. Regrettably, the food was consistently
mediocre and lacked quality. Day after day, the menu remained
the same and made me long for more variety. Luckily, you can
visit off-campus restaurants and try them with your friends if
you start to hate the food options on campus; it’s only a 20
minute walk to most places.
The dorm life I’ve always dreamt of has turned out to be just
that: a dream. I envisioned a clean living space, but
unfortunately, the dorms fell short of those expectations. Dirty
bathrooms and showers, as well as spots of mold latched onto the
carpets were unwelcome surprises that made it painful to
transition from what I was used to. If you decide to dorm, bring
lots of cleaning supplies and scent sprays to make your room
smell pleasant. I implore you to get an air humidifier and a
small vacuum, too.
Stony Brook University achieves record-high enrollment numbers
HTML https://www.sbstatesman.com/2023/10/04/stony-brook-university-achieves-record-high-enrollment-numbers/
Campus life has certainly become more lively as the
university welcomed its largest freshman class ever in the Fall
2023 semester. Alongside a rise in the number of applicants,
Stony Brook University has made strides in drawing more interest
from students locally, nationally and internationally.
The University saw a significant 24.2% increase in applications,
with 55,633 applicants for the 2023-2024 academic year. Last
year, the university received 44,781 applications.
Freshman application rates grew by 23.9%, with 50,435 applicants
for the academic year. In contrast, there were 40,713 freshman
applicants in the 2022-23 academic year.
Mark Cortez, the executive director of admissions at Stony Brook
University, said that the University is making use of its
resources to ensure that student life can continue to thrive
while applications for admissions increase.
Out-of-state student applications grew by 7.1%, as the
institution saw 9,451 out-of-state applicants for the 2023-2024
academic year. In contrast, the university had 8,826
out-of-state applicants in the year prior.
The states with the most out-of-state applicants to the
University were New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts,
California, and Pennsylvania.
Likewise, Stony Brook University saw its total international
student applications increase by 40.5%, with 4,636 international
applicants for the 2023-2024 academic year. The countries with
the most applicants were China, India, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and
Bangladesh.
“I have noticed an increase of students, specifically when I am
going to get food [at the dining halls] the lines are
significantly longer,” Titus said. “When I am going to class
there are more people walking around to and from class.”

SBU not part of new funding programs for students
HTML https://www.sbstatesman.com/2023/10/05/sbu-not-part-of-new-funding-programs-for-students/
SUNY colleges and universities have experienced a drop in
enrollment rates by 6% in their four-year institutions within
the last 10 years. A combination of reasons — including
financial stress, mental health issues and a lack of access to
resources — have led to this rapid decline.
In an effort to prevent further decline, SUNY Chancellor John B.
King Jr. has plans to implement two new programs — Accelerate,
Complete, and Engage (ACE) and Accelerated Study in Associate
Programs (ASAP). First implemented by CUNY schools, they will
assist students in working toward graduation by providing more
accessible resources.
Stony Brook did not appear among the 25 listed participating
campuses; at this time, the Office of Financial Aid has declined
to comment, as the information about the future of this program
is still unknown.

Pearson will report to Stony Brook President Maurie McInnis and
work in close partnership with campus leaders and partners to
identify and advance Stony Brook’s institutional priorities.
Important goals include ensuring implementation and assessment
of the recently completed strategic plan, taking the lead in
developing an overall plan for our Southampton campus, and
assisting in supporting our work as anchor institution for The
New York Climate Exchange on Governors Island in New York City.

While I enjoy college football, these numbers are more support
for the idea that a successful football program does NOT lead to
better outcomes for the university. FBS? Absolutely no need for
it.

yeah. i dont have any benchmark here but 55k applications is
gigantic. both expressed as a percentage of growth from the
prior year, and also as a percentage of how many students are
admitted yearly.
