wanted to share some of the rumblings im hearing at SB... all
word of mouth, no source being shared here (sorry). so take
this for what it's worth. but in the end- a lot of this is good
news, and that's great news, because following a year like last
year, well, is difficult.
-applications are up 35% from last year. also up 100% from 2022
(pandemic)
-SB is starting up a future scholars program, where we help low
income, young kids study and potentially give them an avenue
(and funding) to get into SB. sounds like a great feeder
program, for our type of target student. and, pres mccormick
has already had success with this at other schools. the pilot
is in some of the poorer parts of the hamptons, and is later
expanding to the three village area
-the admin knows that athletics engagement should be a focus and
are coming up with ideas, that are successful at other schools
-the admin also knows that some buildings are dated, have
deferred maintenance, need facelifts, we need new dorms, etc.
Harriman and Chem are dilapidated, especially after flooding.
They're active in albany and more $ should be coming- especially
given we are the flagship
-i heard there may be two new buildings coming, it may depend on
private support but SUNY is on board
-the admin knows its expensive to live in the area, and that
this is a problem, AND there is a bed shortage on campus. it's
not as simple as building; there are regulatory limitations.
good news is tripling may be over for now. also, new dorms may
go up near the tennis courts

-no updates yet on the IFed successor but a search group is on
it. IFed contract is up. there are many candidates. would
appreciate any updates you all have
-homecoming ticket sales (to the events, not the game
necessarily) had an increase of 1400 from last year. probably
helped by a new registration system, among other things. new
donors is up, new participants is up, etc.
-the admin knows it needs to work more with recent grads to keep
them engaged; more events, more communication, etc. Especially
given they all live in the immediate area
-pres. mccormick is inspiring; full of energy, privileged to be
at SB, loves it. his wife works there too. his experience at
Washington, UNC, and Rutgers is not only helpful to us, but,
those are large, high profile, flagship publics. we should
follow his stewardship
-major gifts are up, so is research funding. some caution with
potential cuts in the next administration, but the goal is to
double research funding by 2030. we've added staff to lobby for
funds and apply for grants
-also consider how many foreign students we have and whether the
new administration (enforcement) could cause visa issues and
drop enrollment
-there's been a wave of correction to DEI growth, particularly
at michigan, florida, and texas. there's a feeling that the new
administration may pull incentives if such programs are not
removed, so universities may have to react- or not react
-regard for a college degree has been falling for decades, so
it's harder than ever to find support
-much progress in Southampton, was neglected, now getting
attention; some strained relationships with the town. hospital
needs to be knocked down, but we need cash to rebuild (could
that be on the main campus?), will cost $400m. otherwise there
are many ugly, empty buildings to demo and that will cost
millions
-our partnership with BNL may soon reveal a quantum
communications tower, the first of its kind ever, for high speed
computing. apparently harvard is the other university in the
race but we may have the edge:

-we have the highest pell grant % in the country. you all
should be proud of your alma mater
-the admin understands that we don't have a collegetown AND that
we need a collegetown. bars, food, entertainment, etc.
McCormick knows it because he's been at our peers, and they have
it. this will take time, funding, private enterprise,
resistance from the town, etc. some talk was floated around
about the space between 25a and Kelly Quad

The future for the university is bright now doubt.
From all of these my favorite was the potential "collegetown"
near Kelly Quad. That would do wonders for the university. The
student body needs a place where they can entertain themselves,
bars, center for greek life, etc. It would go a long way towards
improving campus life. Perhaps more kids will stay around on
weekends if they can appropriately entertain themselves within
campus
Remember folks - Stony Brook is the largest residential public
university in New York State. The potential is there. We just
gotta do a better job keeping them on campus during weekends.

in the latest SB Magazine- very large photo of Pres. McCormick
addressing the football team on the field before their first
game. Small, arguably meaningless, and no real cost. but this
guy gets it. given his pedigree, he's done this before. this
is a good sign.
anyway he will make recommendations to the new pres, said that
we can't just be content to be the flagship we have to act like
it, focus on research, connecting east/west campus, fixing
facilities, modernization, more dorms.
there's also a new Seawolves Village, which sounds like
temporary housing for dorms:

4042 first year students is the largest ever, up 13% from last
year. we received 56k applications, more than any SUNY.
we had our accreditation confirmed with no recommendations.
the search for a new pres is underway but i really dont see how
you could top this guy. im willing to be surprised.
