If Stony Brook University truly wants to go “far beyond,” it
needs to address its administration issues

Although Stony Brook is a fierce competitor with the best
universities in the country, problems in areas such as
infrastructure, parking, housing, Wi-Fi connectivity and more
create inconveniences that, when added together, can affect
students’ ability to learn.
Even though commuter students make up almost 50% of the campus
population, they only have access to six of the 42 parking lots
on campus. To park in five of these locations — lots 3, 5A, 5B,
6A and 24 — students have to pay $112.50 per semester. These
lots, also known as commuter premium lots, are at a walking
distance from the academic mall. The only other option is Lot
40, formerly known as South P — an enormous square of parking
spots with “Wolfie’s Hut” at its heart. However, it is a 15 to
20 minute bus ride away from the main campus, causing
inconveniences for students who have to factor in an
unpredictable bus schedule and wait in very long lines that can
spread around the hut.
Beyond problems with the elevator, students who answered the
form also expressed concerns about moldy dorms, a shortage of
washers and dryers and lack of prior notice from the university
when a new student is placed in the dorm

I wasn't sure where to put this but. WOW!!! This is big money.
Sadly, none of it will find its way to SBU athletics.
Nonetheless, this is huge for SBU.

The money is no strings attached. I'm sure at some point this
will very much benefit the athletics department

Not if history repeats itself. Simon has zero interest in
athletics. I'm pretty sure he made that clear years ago. I'll
have to try and dig deep for that.

Whether is directly benefits Athletics budget or not, rising
tides raise all ships. Endowment is a major thing to contribute
too. Essentially it gets invested in the market and hopefully
allows the university to live off the dividends and interests in
perpetuity. That's why they are calling it the "infinity" gift.
This should have a massive impact on every stony brook budget
for the rest of time. Also as a bonus it maxes out the State
gift match program. Impossible to quantify the impact the will
have across the U. Hopefully the endowment is being invested
with Simons world renowned Renaissance Hedge Fund that has
allowed him to get so wealthy.

WOW is right! It's "the largest unrestricted gift in the history
of higher education." Whether athletics benefits or not doesn't
matter. This could catapult the university into the top 10-15
public universities over the next few years. The point of
college athletics is to support academics and student life. If
not a dime of this goes to athletics, mission accomplished
anyway.

Tremendous!! Great news. It will also trigger another $200m
matching from the state. Our current endowment is $370m. With
this $500m+$200m, in 7 years our endowment would be over a
billion!!! Kudos to Simons!!!

A lot of buildings around campus could use updates both inside
and outside. Plumbing, for starters, is shit in most of the
older buildings, as are the AC/Heating systems. I know the money
would be better suited towards better professors and equipment,
but modernizing the "little things" would go far away with the
student body.
This is fascinating news to see the endowment triple over the
next half-decade and change. Selfishly, I'm excited because it
will make my degree just a hint more valuable to a job one day.
But it's also really cool to see that a school on Long Island,
and not in the city, LA, Texas, or anywhere else, was spread
across numerous media outlets today (Forbes, NYT, to name a
couple) and for a good reason. And who knows, maybe,
justtttttttttttt maybe, because more money is coming in for
education, they'll earmark a couple more bucks for athletics.
Oh, who am I kidding, that'll never happen. But a man can dream.

i agree with the above. this is good news.
of course, the U now has to play its hand right. we've muffed
that before.
i agree some infrastructure can use a facelift. you all know
this but i'd just as soon drop $10m into student life, if not
more. but that's me. and, if doing so, it has to be done
right. that one we've been wrong way virtually every time.
i just so happened to finish reading a book about simons just
today- a lot of good SB references in here! PS not a beginners
book on the topic.
