So here we are at the start of, hopefully, a great rivalry.
Let's see if we can hold up our end of the bargain because it
has been tough sledding against our neighbors going way way
back. We are 5-18 overall against Hofstra all time, and 1-12 in
their building. Woof.
If you look at last year's box score – when we absolutely
steamrolled them at the Fed – you can really see the disparity
in talent from then to now. A starting five where everybody was
a threat, Policelli leading the second unit, JRod with some
scoring punch, Habwe with some energy. And then appropriately
assigned mop-up time. And it's so easy to cast stones after last
night's performance, and I do sympathize with the lack of depth
– I do think we're closer to .500 with everybody. But it's the
roster makeup that I can't give a pass to. If you watched
Hofstra/Towson last night, we feel light years behind them in
terms of firepower. Basically last year's team with ball
movement and chemistry.
I really thought the Estrada talk was overdone last year after
his almost invisible performance against us last year. But he
went on to win CAA POY honors, and ought to win it again this
year. Look at that line. What a monster season. He's been very
impressive and he has Hofstra rolling, with four straight wins
and now tied with Charleston in the conference standings. I
really don't see where Hofstra's going to lose over the next
month – maybe at Northeastern? Maaaaybe here if TSM returns? You
forget that this same team that we have went toe to toe with
West Virginia, probably could have beaten Yale or Wilmington
here, did beat Drexel, etc. But I dunno, these games feel like
too tall of an order, especially this weekend's.
Estrada picked a really great running mate in the offseason with
Tyler Thomas. He was a 1,000 point scorer at Sacred Heart, and
has really flourished in Hofstra's shooter friendly offense.
He's averaging 18 points a game in conference play, and just hit
dagger after dagger against Towson. Claxton's done a nice job
bringing in impact transfers between Estrada, Thomas, Dunbar and
Williams, and the kid Bryce Washington (Penn) has even had a
nice stretch for them here. I don't know for sure what Hofstra
thinks of Claxton in terms of Xs and Os, but he seems like a
home run hire for that program – vast NBA experience, vast
coaching experience right on campus, and he's an alum. Just
awesome. And if you're a guard like Estrada who was searching
for a home after playing at Oregon, who better to learn from? I
have to think he's brought out the best in him, just like we saw
in years past with Justin Wright-Foreman, Desure Buie, Eli
Pemberton, Juan'Ya Green before them.
The ability to keep talent and recruit talent from the transfer
portal is just so crucial for mid-majors. Our victories have
been Policelli a few years back and, I think, Fitzmorris, who's
probably under scrutiny a little more because of the minutes
he's had to play but is probably Senior Year Petras Plus, who
can contribute. Noll and Clarke would have been solid too. But I
still go back to the roster makeup. We're just this weird team.
For all of Hofstra's success though, they haven't made the NCAA
Tournament since 2001, and they've never won a tournament game
(and neither have we, at least in D-I). In fact, they've lost
their last seven NIT/CBI/CIT games going back more than 15
years. Let's pick it up, Long Island.
As for tomorrow, I just don't see it from our perspective. They
have us in pretty much every element of the game. Zone against
Hofstra is playing into their hands – see the 37 percent clip
from three-point land – and offensively, we're too reliant on
non-shooters to shoot, non-scorers to score, etc. Hofstra,
meanwhile, seems bursting at the seams with guys who can put it
in the hoop, and has just the floor general to get it to them
when he's not scoring himself. With the best player in the
conference, surrounded by talent, I think they're real dangerous
come the conference tournament, so maybe we see an end to that
dry spell.
And for all of our complaining, I think we will get there again
too. Someday.

Really jarring to see the box score from last year. Every player
played but Roberts and he is now the PG. Forgot about Juan wish
he would’ve stuck it out.

I'm trying not to overreact to single games. We've actually won
or kept the deficit under 14.5 in our last 14 games. Granted, we
weren't exactly facing a murderer's row of teams in that stretch
either.
But when picking against the number, if I had to, I'd lean your
way. Hofstra has a chance to make a statement in the region, to
its new conference adversary, and we are coming in looking and
running like a jalopy.

My comment solely based on TSM missing from line-up, and
Policelli shooting out of his mind against Hampton.

I didn't realize that Charleston folded against Drexel so that's
two losses in a row now and they're now tied with Hofstra, which
has the tiebreaker. Towson and UNCW just a game back.
Over in the AE, Albany's now 1-8 in conference and 6-18 overall.
Tough year for the NYS flagships. Wonder if they miss Will
Brown.
Conference tournament if the season ended today:
FIRST ROUND
(13) Monmouth vs (12) Elon
SECOND ROUND
( 8 ) Stony Brook vs (9) Delaware
(5) Drexel vs Monmouth/Elon
(7) Northeastern vs (10) William & Mary
(6) UNC A&T vs (11) Hampton
QUARTERFINALS
(1) Hofstra vs Stony Brook/Delaware
(4) Towson vs Drexel/Monmouth/Elon
(2) Charleston vs Northeastern/W&M
(3) UNCW vs A&T/Hampton
You know the rest ...

If TSM doesn’t come back not sure how this team wins again.
Unless Policelli has a 20 and 10 type game and its a rock fight.
