It's amazing to think about the difference that a couple weeks
have made. Even just getting bodies back, we can feel less like
this patchwork group and more like an actual mid-major
basketball team.
Northeastern and Monmouth were nice tests out of the gate, but
this one feels different. Towson started the year like the
near-unanimous favorite they were billed to be, thumping my
Minutemen in Amherst and beating some solid teams otherwise. But
it's been tough sledding of late. After an unexpected loss to
Fairfield on a neutral floor, they won three straight ... but
then dropped five in a row, including a double-digit loss at
Bryant a couple weeks after we sputtered there. Still,
everybody's talking up Charleston, but I'm convinced that Towson
will be right there at the end. Might we even get two bids if
they or UNCW can figure out a way to oust C of C, who Towson
took to overtime? It's possible. I'll eat up any legitimate
at-large talk you can feed me.
It's easy to see why they were highly touted. While so many
teams scrambled to fill their rosters, Towson remained steady —
same coach, 10 returning players, three of the five first-team
all-conference selections in the preseason (Timberlake, Holden
and Thompson). If Estrada wasn't the preseason POY, it easily
could have been Timberlake, who's been a steady force at Towson
for three-plus years now. He's a bit of a volume guy as you
could see by his shooting numbers, but he's somebody who's going
to run off of screens all day and be able to convert on all
three levels. Holden plays a little bit of that Estrada role for
Towson. In general, I think Towson is a really good passing
team. They have their big three, but I like guys like Russell,
Conway and Rahdir Hicks, who don't get the headlines but play
good minutes and are solid complements. Conway was a four-star
recruit out of high school. He redshirted at Seton Hall and is
already a significant contributor at Towson for potentially a
few years. I also think this freshman Christian May could emerge
in conference play, in the same way that the kid Ball for
Monmouth absolutely should see the floor more.
Towson isn't gigantic but will compete on the glass. In addition
to Thompson and their guards, I really like the kid Sekou Sylla,
who was the national D-II Player of the Year last year at Nova
Southeastern, and he's moved up to the D-I level and produced
really well down low. Total ox underneath a la Doherty from
Northeastern, and he can put it on the floor a bit too. Would
love a guy like him on our roster.
On our side, the question remains if/when we don't feel
obligated to play TSM all 40 minutes. He's just such a dynamic
part of what we do, even if he isn't handling the ball all the
time like a lot of scorers who just pound the ball into the
floor. It's a credit to him. However, take away his offense and
it's difficult to find a reliable alternative. Still ... 40
minutes every night is unsustainable so we have to find a way to
break this routine IMO, even if it's stealing a minute or two
before a media timeout each half. I'd also like to see if Nahar
is capable of being a 10-minute guy off the bench — a step up
from Muratori — and whether he can be a force on the glass and
defensively, if not offensively just yet.
One more note about the Monmouth game that I forgot: heck of a
switch to the zone to stem the tide in that second half. If the
most I have to worry about is Klem Vuga sinking 15-footers, I'm
good. Great call from the bench.
Bottom line with this one though: we're going to have our hands
full. In fact, I wonder if we taste a bit of humble pie with
this one. Towson's very old, very polished, very deep, and
that's without Jason Gibson, who's been out two months with a
back injury. I could see us having trouble scoring. It'll
nevertheless be a good night out, with maybe a slight uptick in
enthusiasm with our first CAA home game against a really good
basketball team.

Gotta say I'm not used to the quick turnaround. AE it was always
Wednesday/Saturday, never just 1 day's rest

With such a large conference footprint there was a lot of travel
and missed classes, so the CAA made a change to this schedule
years ago. With the expansion and a possible N/S divisional
setup, this could change.

Towson forum making fun of the 6:31 start time made me laugh I
still don’t get it. Curious if starting at 7 would help
attendance.

Fitting that it's one of the few changes that Heilbron could
come up, he probably thought he was so smart for it. It's
stupid. Eventually last year he just kept it for the women's
games and switched it back to 7 for men because of how bad
attendance was flopping. He went back to it this year? How dumb.

Towson forum says that Cam Holden is suspended, and their
Twitter says that he didn't play last game because he broke team
rules.

Finally some info….Pav on the broadcast saying that Clarke
“probably done for the season”. Gotta wonder who was responsible
for bringing back Clarke and Frey too early after their
respective injuries. Geno or training staff? Meanwhile, we’re
back to heaving 3’s, and we cannot stop their bigs around the
hoop.
