One of the great things about COVID is that you really have no
choice but to sign up for FloHoops and watch mid-major hoops all
day. So yesterday, we had Elon-Drexel, Northeastern-A&T and then
Delaware-Hofstra in the background. But yeah, that's the end of
the list really (it's fine; operating at 70-80% now).
I wonder if, immediately, Telfort's the best singular talent
we've seen in conference play since Lamb left UVM. I think the
answer is yes on this one, and the comparison isn't a bad one.
Could he even be better? That's probably an overreaction, but I
don't think it's that far off – ask A&T, which saw him drop 31
on him. Regardless, Telfort will be a really tough cover for
whoever draws him. He's a wide-bodied hybrid player who can
knock down the open three but also can put it on the floor, body
you up inside, and finish with a short jumper or through
       contact.
The offense runs through both him and Doherty, who presents a
different challenge down low. He is just a bull, an all-in,
no-out throwback kind of big who works hard on the glass and
does well finishing around the rim over his right shoulder. I
see a little Zach Randolph in him. He missed about a month due
to injury but gives Northeastern even more size in time for the
conference schedule. One strike on him is that he can be foul
prone. He fouled out three times last year and finished with
four fouls in 10 other games. That's Gueye-ish. (Also Gueye:

Like we've seen Vermont do occasionally, Bill Coen, who's seven
wins away from becoming the CAA's all-time leader, went north of
the border to build this team's nucleus, including Telfort,
Nwagha and Stucke (pronounced STOO-ka). I think Turner will
prove to be a really really good get for NU. He ended up as a
three-star recruit out of DC, going from 6-1 to 6-8 and already
establishing himself as a deadeye shooter at the college level.
I think there's more to him than that too.
Then there's the bad. The weakness of this team is very clearly
the guards, just with a general lack of production, lack of a
distributor outside of Telfort (and I like Doherty passing out
of the post), and turnovers have been an issue also. Part of
it's youth for sure, but in the short term, McClintock, Cormier,
Pridgen, Troutman, Woods, they very much looked like secondary
pieces who I question whether they could step up and be the
third or even fourth guy in a big game. Maybe.
My biggest curiosity going into tomorrow is our health. Who will
we have back? It's exciting to have finished the non-conference
schedule the way we did and to foresee the return of Clarke and
Frey, and maybe the debut of Nahar. With the one-bid nature of
our conference at this time, we could always point to this as a
target date for their return, if they were on the fence
health-wise. Well here we are. Let's see what we have.
I don't love that Northeastern has a game under its belt
post-Christmas, and we've been off for nine days. I feel like
this would have been the week for St. Joe's or Miami Hamilton
just to get the juices going again. Or maybe, if we had those
scheduled, I'd just be saying "let's get out of this healthy."
But I am concerned about going into a spacious hockey arena –
the world's oldest – against a team that shook off any rust
       already.
The key in this game and in many others is how we perform on the
glass – keeping Doherty from getting easy buckets on second
chances and making the most of our own. I think Fitz has a
chance to be a difference maker on both ends, and we'll need him
to be. I would also like to see us turn up the heat on the young
NU guards, of which there are many, none of whom impressed.
Granted, it's a small sample size.
Whatever the result, it's the start of an exciting chapter in
our program's development. It's short-sighted to look too much
into our proximity to the AE in conference strength (24 to 27 at
the moment), but it will be good in the end. I can get behind
some of these rivalries too – Hofstra, Northeastern, Drexel,
Monmouth, Towson, I think they can be good. And even in the
short term, Charleston's not that far off at-large talk,
Wilmington's won 10 straight, we're in good company. I think
that, just based on their locations, their non-conference
schedules will inevitably be better than we saw in the AE and
that helps the rest of us.

OT: Women absolutely demolish William & Mary in their CAA debut.
89-61 win. And W&M has two preseason first-teamers.

though the list above is just the notables (mostly forwards),
this is a LARGE opponent. do we come out big as a result?
our guards are a bit undersized, i think. well, that is the
       guards that are healthy.
but we have been playing good basketball the past few games.
gotta keep the momentum, first CAA tilt, GO SB!

They've had 11 different guys start games this year and they're
third in the country in bench minutes, so you really could
choose anybody beyond the top three. I picked Stucke for his
shooting and Nwagha for his general activity. I'd say above
average size but not overwhelming. A&T hung with them on the
glass, but they're also highly athletic.

OP date correction 12/31. Sorry for nitpicking.
Let’s go Seawolves. This is also a NY vs Boston game.

       For 2022!
J/K. Heard the same. That’d be a shame if we lost him too,
particularly if bringing him back early contributed to any kind
of setback. Granted, I have a little more faith in our backcourt
       than when the season started.
