Well, we all know what's coming on Thursday, but perhaps we can
take solace in the fact that, after getting drubbed in Florida,
we've gotten healthier, we've rallied a little bit, and we may
not be half bad come conference play.
While it's disappointing to see that five CAA teams are in the
300s in NET rankings, and we're one of them, I do appreciate
knowing that we'll have some opportunities to win some games and
maybe even finish middle of the pack, which was a realistic goal
at the beginning of the season. Granted, I think we'd all agree
that we're more apt to finish near the bottom than the top, but
nevertheless, I'm starting to like what I see out there and
think it could produce some good results.
What's interesting about this West Virginia team is that I think
we all expect to go in there and get taken into the back room
and bludgeoned. With Bob Huggins teams, I've always thought
they'd beat you up inside, rebound the heck out of it, defend
every corner of the floor, etc. They might not be able to shoot!
But they'll test your will. There are still all those intangible
elements, but this team can really really score, having racked
up 75 or more points in all nine wins, and eclipsed 80 seven
times this season already, including when it pummeled Florida
(yeah, that Florida) by an 84-55 count. Transitive property:
we're in trouble!
It's Huggins' best shooting team since he came to Morgantown,
with an effective FG% that puts them top 20 nationally. They're
hitting at almost 38 percent as a team from three. Mitchell was
viewed as a pro prospect at UMass before transferring to Texas
and now West Virginia. He's really smooth on the block and has
no problem stepping out and shooting it either. Bell is coming
off a monster outing against Buffalo where he had 17 of his 18
points in the second half. 6-10/285 is just a beast of an
individual.
What I really notice about this group is how old they are. The
core of this group is all seniors and grad students. Stevenson's
on his fourth school—starting at Wichita State before going to
South Carolina, Washington and now West Virginia #ridiculous.
Matthews spent three season at WVU, did a year at Washington and
came back. Toussaint's from Iowa. Huggins even reeled in another
vet, all-MAAC performer Jose Perez, from Manhattan.
Unfortunately, just last week Perez was denied immediate
eligibility after he bolted there when Steve Masiello was axed
two weeks before the season. He could've helped.
On our front, it was great to see TO back in uniform. Is Clarke
close too? Frey? Nahar? Here's where I skewer Newsday again for
not offering anything other than game stories. A notebook
between games that covers things such as injuries would be nice.
Maybe they have one queued up for when we start CAA play.
I think we may see shades of the first month, with a disjointed
offense, some ugly looks, limited second chances, turnovers.
West Virginia's beaten all nine of its opponents by double
digits, and teams of our kind by a lot more so I'm keeping my
expectations low. But, as I said, the consolation is that we're
in a much better place physically and emotionally than we were a
week or two weeks ago. We can expect to go into Northeastern on
NYE and compete.

Addendum: I meant to note how few WVU alums have made the pros.
Sure, there's Jerry West, Rod Thorn, Hot Rod Hundley, etc., but
only six have been drafted in the last 40 years and none have
really stuck, that is, aside from Jevon Carter. This is one of
my favorite interview clips. I respect a kid like Carter who
wasn't this gifted scorer but made an impression (and a career)
in a different way.

firstly, checkie, thanks as always. i felt bad that last game's
writeup got deleted after all your hard work.
Yes, newsday stinks and always has.
Yes, we have ralled a bit the last two games, which i think is
undervalued when you consider all the setbacks in this young
season. I love how TSM has emerged as a "give me the ball
during crunchtime" guy, which i dont think was yet obvious a few
years ago.
i predict WVU pushes the ball with depth and length and to press
us in transition. i can hope for 20 good minutes but im not
sure that's even too much to ask. this is a VERY good team,
that is battle tested year-in, year-out. let's make it a game
and give them a scare. GO SB

Since we're playing a P5 team today we have some additional
gambling lines we wouldn't normally have. Here is how I'm
playing tonight (live outside of NY so I can gamble on SBU
games).
Stony Brook is 26.5 point underdogs for tonight according to
Vegas. Kenpom has them losing by 26. I feel like they'll
probably lose by more considering they seem to be holding out
the injured guys for CAA play but I ultimately don't have too
strong a lean on that line.
What I'm more interested in is the half lines. As of now, Stony
Brook is 16 point underdogs in the first half and 10.5 point
underdogs in the second half. My feeling is the game goes the
opposite way. We come out feeling good after the win over Army
and keep it close through half time and then WVU breaks it open
late with their depth and athleticism advantage.
My bets for tonight: SBU 1H +16, WVU 2H -10.5

I'd take the SB to win "money line" bet waaaay before betting on
the Jets to win tonight. ;D

I can get this one on ESPN+, so might as well tune in and see
our guys at least once this year (whatever that means).

You guys like those grainy videos of Geno playing at Ohio U?
Every segment shown, he was shooting a 3. I guess we’re a chip
off the ‘ol block.
