I think I have a little PTSD from last year's game, where we got
taken to the woodshed. I did not see it coming, not after
beating Yale and thumping American just days earlier. But I
don't think I've witnessed a more one-sided game in person at
IFCU, especially in the second half, when they shot 71 percent
and outscored us 48-26. It ended up being our worst home loss
since losing to St. John's by 41 in our first home game as a D-I
team. It prompted sbupatriots to say that Wagner "isn't better
than us, they're much better than us" #fact and we all talked
about guys who could replace Geno. LOL. Some things never
change.
Things are different on Staten Island now though. The luster
wore off Bashir Mason when Wagner, a tournament hopeful, got
demolished by Bryant, so instead of moving up, I think he moved
down. And it's a weird merry-go-round. He took over for Shaheen
Holloway at St. Peter's after their dream run. Holloway went to
his alma mater, Seton Hall, and his assistant of one year,
Donald Copeland, a Seton Hall grad from Jersey City (where St.
Peter's is located), took the head job at Wagner, where he'd
previously spent six years as an assistant under Mason. It's
great because Copeland assuredly shopped for the groceries when
he was there and now he gets to cook the dinner.
All Copeland did in his head coaching debut was beat Temple in
OT on the road—and that Temple's gone on to beat Villanova,
Rutgers and VCU hasn't hurt Wagner's status. Although they've
leveled out, I still expect them to be a formidable matchup for
us—a low bar at this stage, I know.
Only Williams and guard Javier Ezquerra saw meaningful minutes
in last year's win against us, but Hunt developed into a key
piece and others have stayed. He also hit the transfer portal
and got key pieces in Moore (St. Joe's—not that St. Joe's) and
Brown. The philosophy is similar, which is basically to say they
make up for modest scoring ability (with oft-poor shot
selection) by wreaking havoc defensively and seeing whether the
opposition can handle it. It's one of those games where I'm
really happy to have Clarke's experience handling the ball, but
it'll take all five guys to get it up the floor. We need Roberts
and Pettway to hold their own too.
They've really had trouble shooting the ball, from anywhere
really. Wagner is 22 for 47 from the free throw line in the last
four games. And what's crazy is just how often they're fouling—a
product of the press and being undersized undoubtedly. Teams
have taken 216 free throws—so that's 27 attempts a night—to
Wagner's 118. When you take into account Wagner's poor shooting,
they're giving up nearly 11 points a night at the line. Eleven!
Every single game!
I wonder if we can take advantage of that trend. We've been
taking about 15 FTs a night, but this doesn't feel like a roster
whose comfortable attacking on the regular and drawing contact.
Maybe TSM—who's awesome BTW.
From my angle, Wagner's a little bigger, a little brawnier, and
a little more athletic than Sacred Heart, and it has some Bryant
qualities also. If past performance and even Monday's win are
any indication, we're going to have our work cut out for us on
the glass against Wagner and every night really.
An aside: A nitpicky thing about Policelli that bothers me—I've
noticed that sometimes he catches the ball, has an open look,
instead takes a dribble, and then steps back to take a contested
shot instead. Don't overthink it! Be decisive! Be Sarvan! He's
never met a shot he doesn't like. We need Frankie's O and I
believe that he can knock down shots when he's in rhythm. It'll
fall.
I'd like to see us continue to leverage our size with the likes
of Fitz, Sarvan and, to a lesser degree, Policelli. Not all the
time, but in recent games it's led to some high percentage
opportunities and, in the case of Sacred Heart, a victory and a
10-place jump in the NET rankings (from 357 to 347, yuck and
still yuck). Wagner's going to ratchet it up defensively so I
don't know if it'll be that easy, but it's a good approach given
our roster makeup, and they're pretty good passers out of the
post too.
Wagner's probably still got us here. I'd probably take whatever
the under is.

I think the game is available for streaming on NEC's platform.
Not sure if it's free or subscription based.

wagner's got a nice full court press. no surprise that teams
are doing this to us, considering our injuries and lack of
depth. i'd do the same.
we went into a zone on defense, worth noting with 2 bigs out
there.
otherwise, it looks like we got the memo- pass the ball, take
advantage of size, move it into the paint and use size to score
high % shots. and so we are up 20-12 on wagner (who looks like
a pretty good team btw).

Pleasantly surprised at the half. Most shots coming within the
arc (good), excellent Ft shooting, not allowing Wagner 2nd
chances. Can we last another half?

excellent point. not only do inside shots go down easier, we
got 13 FTs (wag has 3).
