You can't help but be encouraged by the way we played against
Yale. The steady hand and downhill attack of Aaron Clarke really
made all the difference, and it felt like we had at least some
(but still not much) wiggle room in terms of roster usage. And
in our own gym, the shots went down, and I think in most
circumstances, when you hit at that kind of clip, you come out
victorious. But we still have some things to work on.
I just want to see us do it again. And what's this look like
when the shots don't go down? Was the Yale game the real us or
       an anomaly?
So here's a team that, under St. Anthony's grad Jared Grasso, is
going to get up and down the floor—they're fifth in the country
in scoring (89.0 ppg) and 12th in fast-break points (18.6/game).
With that pace comes encouraging turnover numbers—16th in margin
       (+5.4) and 30th in turnovers forced (17.8 ). It's produced some
awesome results, this from a team that was 3-28 in 2017-18
before Grasso took over. They've won two straight at Syracuse
now, most recently taking a 73-72 decision at the Carrier Dome
and ruffling Jim Boeheim's feathers in the process. They made
two consecutive postseason appearances, including a loss to
Wright State in the play-in game of the NCAAs last year. It
ought to be a three-horse race in the AE this year between
Vermont, Bryant and Lowell, which has steamrolled a bunch of
patzers in the early going en route to a 9-1 record but gets a
good test with UMass on Thursday (to be clear, I'll take a win
over any D-I opponent at this point).
Grasso has made some hay in the transfer portal, and why
wouldn't somebody want to go fill their stat sheet in this kind
of system? Gross-Bullock was the A-10 Sixth Man of the Year last
year at La Salle. This has to be the last stop for Timberlake,
who was a four-star recruit out of high school and has made
stops at Miami and Memphis to this point. Walker's going to be
27 years old on January 1; he started at Georgetown, played
three seasons at URI, and is now a real presence inside for
Bryant. We should also be familiar with Doug Edert, a lights-out
(and bratty) shooter in St. Peter's NCAA run last year, and
Kvonn Cramer, a killer on the glass who came over from Hofstra.
       Yes, yet another Frankenstein team.
Another one of note: Miles Latimer. He'll come off the bench. As
for overlap with SBU, it's just TSM and Policelli. Even if they
skipped town, I still root for guys to do well elsewhere. I
appreciated Miles' shooting and, more than anything else, his
defensive acumen on the perimeter. Really solid one-on-one
       defender.
This game is where I think Clarke will be huge. He's faced this
kind of havoc before, dropping 21 in a tight contest with Bryant
just last year. With Jenkins gone, TO green and on the shelf,
Kaine not really a 30-minute guy at the point, to have Clarke at
the wheel gives us a chance. I'm thinking we have the guards to
withstand the pressure. I feel like this is a theme, but
especially against Bryant, I wonder where this puts Fitz and
Muratori. I have been impressed with Fitz's agility in general,
and we may use him as a pivot point against the press. I kind of
like him as a passer in a halfcourt setting too.

You know that the America East will have an eye on this one and
would like nothing more than for its new addition to run us out
of the gym to show a net positive result. And for one game, yes,
that may be the case—the line ought to come in at 10 or above.
But you can't help but feel like the move to the CAA was a
terrific move in the long run. And if we beat Bryant in their
       own gym? That'd feel good.

I agree. We did hang with URI and Brown at their place, so maybe
it’s a Rhode Island thing and it happens again.
I wonder when the last time was that a team played three Rhode
Island teams on the road in the same season. Providence would be
       #4.

KenPom has our odds of winning at 40% or better for just five
games this season, and we're favored according to their models
in the home games against Monmouth and Elon. I think Frey
returning can't happen soon enough, but let's also recognize
that conference play is where it's at for us so let's make sure
he recuperates fully. I'm curious what Nahar ends up bringing to
       the table too.

The bottom 5 teams in the CAA have a combined D1 record of 3-32.
Pretty abysmal for a conference move that was supposed to be a
       step up from the AEC.
