So we'll get this one. That's the good news.
St. Joe's just finished playing a tournament up in Schenectady,
and this will be their third game in four days, but
nevertheless, it's got to be a nice lift for them. And it's
great to look on their roster and see Mattituck, Miller Place,
Island Trees, Commack, Sachem East, et al. They can't have ever
seen a 7-3 person in their careers, and to do so in front of
friends and family at Island Federal, that's pretty cool.
Here's what I don't like. This used to be an opportunity to get
the end of our bench some quality minutes, at least in teams of
quantity. We could go out there, work on some things, move the
ball around, have some fun, etc. But given the state of our
roster, and our season for that matter, we can't even do that.
If we have to fill the 200 minutes on the floor, that's at least
25 minutes for everyone if it's spread evenly.
But ... but ... not so fast, my friend. I looked at how these
games were treated in the past and was very surprised to see
that Greene and Roberts played 30 minutes against Farmingdale
State. In 2019 under Boals, our starters finished between 19 and
24 minutes against Farmingdale, while you saw TPP hit a career
high, Ochefu put up a nice line, etc. When we beat Molloy in
2018, Olaniyi played 34 minutes and Yeboah 32. Really? But then
back to the other tack in 2017—no more than 22 minutes for
anybody when we hung 101 on Shawnee State. So I don't know what
the right way to do it is. I do know that we'll have to have
everyone play significant minutes given our lack of depth.
I'm also fairly sure that this game will be lightly attended.
Why can't they just give away these tickets to local elementary
school students, fill up the arena, cash in at the concession
stand and have it be a fun night?
The good news is we'll end our streak of games in the 50s at
three. I was surprised that I only had to go back to 2021 to see
the last time that happened—a 1-2 stretch. And we actually
finished in the 50s in four straight contests in 2020, splitting
those games. You can't help but have a gloomier outlook for this
group. At this moment, our offensive deficiency is the worst
it's been since KenPom started calculating the stat in 2001-02
... AND it's our worst defensive efficiency too. Woof. But ...
let's see how things shake out when everyone's healthy.
To get walloped by FIU and Eastern Washington, though, does not
bode well for the rest of our non-conference schedule, and if we
can't get Clarke and Frey back as significant contributors, for
the entire season. Yale beat Vermont by 29 last week. Bryant
just beat Syracuse. There's a soft spot after that with Sacred
Heart, Wagner and Army, but let's be honest—they're look at us
on the soft spot on their schedule. I think it's a win if we
head into our CAA opener against Northeastern at 4-9.

Speaking of Bryant, I would strongly encourage Heilbron to get
on the phone with Jared Grasso ASAP. I think he'd be a great
       coach for this program.
Stop hiring guys from Ohio- there are plenty of coaches with
Northeast roots across major programs in this country.
