Huge stretch here—four games, all away from home, and all with a
roster that is extremely strapped at this point.
What I don't like about how things look at this point is we
basically are what we are. We have our first five and a few guys
off the bench, but in terms of mobility, guys barely even have
to earn their time on the floor. It's not like we can dial back
Policelli's minutes and give more to Roberts, or start Muratori
ahead of Sarvan or Fitz. Maybe Pettway—an afterthought last year
and coming into the season—steals some of TO's minutes in the
early going until Clarke arrives. And Pettway's looked pretty
good I think! But beyond that? I dunno. Injuries have Geno's
hands tied. He looks down the bench and sees a 7-3 guy, two 6-2
guys and nothing in between. Little size, little shooting,
little experience ... it's just rough. Whether he's to blame for
some of it by using Frey against Florida—even after he said it
didn't look good with him getting X-rayed the day before—is up
for debate. Why is there always something with this team the
       last few years?
I wasn't at the game Friday and maybe we were good. But only a
20-point win against those guys? Were they actually decent? I
see some of these lopsided scores—UNCW pummeling an equally
obscure school called Allen by 49, a bad Hampton team rolling by
30 over Regent, a bad William & Mary team winning by 76, and I'm
hopeful that it was Geno taking it easy on his chum. There might
have been some of that, but was it actually an accurate litmus
       test?
URI is a wounded dog right now, and I just don't like this spot.
In Archie Miller's first two games at the helm, they've lost to
Quinnipiac and Texas State at home. That hasn't kept the
oddsmakers from installing us a double-digit dog—I thought those
results would matter a little more, but a middle-of-the-pack
team in the preseason poll, they're expected to be better than
this. I way undershot the spread based on their previous
results, but they should really be in control here.
If they're going to be, they have to shoot it better. URI is 3
for 22 from deep this season, the poor conversion rate almost as
staggering as the lack of volume. Right now, they're ranked
350th out of 352 teams in attempts, and dead last in makes per
game. I'd expect that to change a little but the returnees
couldn't shoot it last year either. It's also interesting to see
the names of some teams who rank in the bottom 25 in three
attempts nationally – Gonzaga, North Carolina, Villanova,
Arkansas, Syracuse, Oklahoma, Texas, etc. There are some crap
teams in there too, and some of those teams can bully teams to a
pulp, but nevertheless, those are some big-time programs who
       aren't firing away.
With our lack of depth and perimeter defenders, and their lack
of shooting, I expect we'll show them a lot of zone. Florida did
a pretty good job of picking it apart, but not everybody has
Castleton in the middle and talent in every direction. Another
sore spot for URI is their propensity for turnovers—41 in two
games so far. And I'll remind you: this is Quinnipiac and Texas
State, not teams that are ranked or are any threat to be ranked.
But we have to give them the same berth that we're giving other
teams with tremendous roster transition—their two prized
four-star recruits bolting for Arkansas after URI HC David Cox
was let go, others going elsewhere. Miller has pieced it
together, most notably bringing in Tchikou (Alabama) and Brandon
Weston (Seton Hall), who were highly touted out of high school
and are potential long-term answers. Brayon Freeman was an
All-Rookie selection at GW but has played minimally thus far for
       URI.
On our side, I wonder how we can hold up here. I'm thankful for
Sarvan, who appears to have an appetite to score, being in there
alongside TSM and Policelli. I'm pleased with Fitz so far—not a
world beater but somewhere in the Sturdivant range. TO—he'll be
fine but I'd like him to attempt to finish at the rim or with
the mid-range. It's just so strange to feel like this is it,
that beyond Clarke and hopefully Frey sometime soon, help isn't
       really on the way.
       My fingers are crossed.

This game could go a lot of different ways. Rhode island coming
off two bad losses rallies and blows us out or they really are
that bad and we get a win. I think a single digit competitive
loss is what should happen. A win only happens if Policelli TSM
Sarvan really play well and we get good scrappy guard play.

This is a really interesting two game set in Rhode Island. We
have Rhode Island (#165 on KP) and Brown (#253 on KP). Between
the two we should really get a feel for where we stack up this
season. Outside of Towson (#84) most teams in the league will
fall somewhere in the range of the two teams were playing this
week. I like what Geno said in the post game on Friday, the
offense is all about creating space in the paint for the guards
to drive. They key for me will be if TO and TSM can get to the
rack with a good sized URI interior. Definitely could not
against the length of UF. I have my fingers crossed for 1-1 on
our trip to Rhode Island. If its a convincing 0-2 we could be in
       for a long season.

       Just started watching the game.
That 2-3 defense is lax. Definitely not Syracuse's 2-3, which is
active and extended. Easily screenable if the wings don't pop
up. Especially with a big man in the middle, I'd think you'd
want the forwards extended out. (We coach Syracuse's 2-3 at the
high school level, and we see zones of all types)
Fitzmorris is really slow and really big.
UPDATE: We made subs, and the 2-3 is definitely more extended -
and Moritori is even bigger. Holy smokes!

Loving the screen and roll with Muratori. The guards are doing a
good job getting it to him.
I think we’re still going to run hot and cold offensively until
       Frey and Clarke return.
This broadcast is tough. Are they college kids? Drink every time
       they say “great.”

I have to shut the volume off. Can’t listen to this announcer.

my thoughts after only a few minutes of play...
our bigs need to be a little more physical in the paint,
particularly on defense. step to shooters, use size, take body.
with that said im all for the 2-3 zone with a depleted roster.
let midmajors shoot threes and miss them, like we do. maybe you
       pull an upset.
the wild three point attempts, as usual, yields very little
results (0/10, most in the first three minutes). yet we're 6/6
       otherwise.
       i know, they'll fall.
we are moving the ball better though, than the last few seasons.
i like what i see from Toby Ony. good intensity overall.

This is my first Stony Brook game this season. Is the 2-3 new?
To play an effective 2-3 requires a ton of drilling. Foot
positioning, for one. It's different for the wings as it is for
the guards up top. Also, making rotations that you wouldn't make
in man. For example, when the ball hits the high post, the
guards have to fan out and find shooters (instead of
collapsing). Also, understanding where the soft spots are (short
corners) and what to do when that happens (trap).
My point is that making a 2-3 work takes time to get it right -
and we're getting a lot wrong in this game. Ford will use the
tape to correct the team. However, I really like the idea,
especially with the two very big bigs.
The HS team I coach likes playing zone because it forces our
opponents to play their third or fourth best offense against us
       - and it disrupts their practice plans where they have to
prepare for us in a chaotic way.
With two slow bigs, this is a really nice strategy. But we're
       not there yet. Not close.
