the transfer portal, so the only reason that Geno was hired in
the first place, to keep Akwasi, he f*cked that up, and saddled
the school with a hefty 5-year contract to boast. Heilbron got
swindled, because of course he did. Making a 5-year contract
decision should have nothing to do with retaining one good
player for one extra year, that's gambling the next 4 years for
a 1-year future that didn't even happen.

it's also an insane risk. Ewing at Georgetown is a disaster.
Hardaway at Memphis has been mixed. You don't want to risk
burning that bridge in the event that Coach Warney
underperforms.

Interesting reads, particularly from Akwasi, who had Geno as an
assistant coach. Without knowing what the culture was like with
Boals/Geno at the helm, I can honestly say that I don't blame
Heilbron for doing what he did, in the spirit of keeping what
was a Championship-caliber team together. The 5 year deal
should have been a 3-year deal, IMO, but knowing that Heilbron
was afraid of the team breaking up if Akwasi left, Geno had him
over a barrel, and got an ultra-sweetheart deal.
Now, in retrospect, we know that this was the wrong move, but at
the time, I didn't think it was the worst decision in the world,
and may have been worth the gamble.
Geno had a legal issue with his last team (Bradley), and you can
bet that he has golden parachute clauses written into his
current SBU contract, should he get let go prior to his full
contract playing out. Can SBU afford a minimum of a $700K
balloon payment to Geno, if they decide to let him go, while
taking on the financial burden of a new coach? This stuff
doesn't seem to happen at SBU ever, except for the rare case of
Fiore.

I知 pretty sure Jameel said that in a jest. It would be horrible
decision to hire him as HC. Now to hire him in other role? I知
all for it. Would love to have him groom under a coach.

No, I think he'd jump all over a job offer like that. He's
making circa $300K playing in China, and if he'd get comparable
here, I'm sure he'd be all over it. That said, I agree with
you. Being a great player doesn't make you a great coach. He'd
need to put his dues in as an assistant somewhere (maybe at
SBU).

Warney is being groomed by Pro players and coaches in Asia. I
think if SBU took a chance on him there will be a waiting room
for season tickets. This hire would be just as good as Coach
Pikiel. Who has the backing of Pikiel.. SH would be a fool not
to make the move for Warney

Under Geno Ford??? Never. Ford sucks. He sucked at Bradley and
he sucks here. Warney would do a better job out of the gate than
what Ford is doing now.

Of course not under Ford. We need to replace Ford asap. But
under whoever the new coach is or even under Pikiell at Rutgers.
Similar to how Pikiell paid his dues as assistant at different
colleges including at UConn under his old coach Calhoun.
