After the debacle with the CAA announcement and the swoon that
followed, I didn't think we'd see this day�back in second place
in the AE. But here we are, following a quick two-game win
streak for us and both UMBC and Binghamton dropping their last
two.
What's it all mean? You may say "not a great deal" but a good
finishing kick could result in a postseason tournament
appearance, which I'm always in favor of.
When UMBC was here, I came away not feeling as though Kennedy
could be "the guy" for them and that they lacked that person.
But maybe he is. Since the four-point dud here, Kennedy has
ripped off nine straight double-digit games, averaging better
than 16 points a night in that span. I really thought that he
was somebody who had to want the ball more as he's easily their
most dynamic talent, with the ability to get to the rim, use his
athleticism to finish, but he's got a nice mid-range game to go
with the ability to shoot the three. He's had a real nice
stretch. If I was a UMBC fan, I'd want to see him assert himself
in what's an important game for UMBC.
Nathan Johnson�who visited SBU years ago before committing to
UMBC�has played major minutes since the conference season began,
and the Retrievers have also turned to Szymon Wojcik, who's a
load underneath at 6-9/220 but he can also step out and shoot
it. Their injection into the lineup does give them more size, a
premium commodity for UMBC, which like us has had trouble on the
glass. We owned that category in our last meeting, and honestly,
the game never really felt in doubt in the second half. It felt
like we were the more talented, more physical team.
How many guys we got left on the roster? The Jenkins injury is a
tough one as he was our most effective offensive weapon last
time. It just didn't seem like Rogers could guard him, and you
take away that kind of playmaker and it's a different game. But
we've hung in there OK without him so we'll see.
This was always billed as the battle for second place, and it's
shaped up to be exactly that. This feels like a toss-up and
they've got home court, a lot to play for, and the willingness
to exact revenge on their minds. Let's see if we can spoil all
that.

Thanks, Checkmate. What is the status of Jenkins? Nature of
injury? Timetable? Haven't seen anything on this.
Also, look at the 2 posts I made from yesterday on a different
thread. There was a reversal yesterday of decision to ban UIC
from the Horizon League post-season playoffs. Possible glimmer
of hope for SBU?

Umbc announcer never finished his thought. Said that Jenkins had
wisdom teeth taken out and will probably not play again this
year? Bad infection or what?

part of me sympathizes. the elijah drama. and injury. the
covid thing. the elijah drama. the CAA debacle. getting
torched by UVm. and then the back to back heartbreakers.
all the while we were told this was supposed to be the team. of
course, some never believed that, but now its really
indisputable.
