       Last trip to Bangor!
It's funny how this team has changed since our first meeting.
Sam Ihekwoaba was all the rage, now he's scrapping for minutes.
LeChaun DuHart was this big loss when he had to sit the last
time; now they seem to be doing fine without him (fine being
relative; and he's got time as only a sophomore). Meanwhile,
nobody was really talking about Klanjscek and he has firmly
established himself as a top two option offensively with Masic,
and Maine didn't have their top rebounder and rim
       protector—Ingo—the last time either.
And they're coming into this thing feeling pretty good, and
rightfully so. On Wednesday, they went into Albany and soundly
beat the Great Danes, going 13 for 22 from deep and shooting 52
percent overall. Again, this is a team that hasn't won more than
five conference games since the 2012-13 season, and to have a
young and capable corps of guys is a real positive.
We were in control for much of the last game, and yeah, to watch
a 21-point lead get filed down to eight at the buzzer was
disappointing. And to make matters worse, Masic was largely a
non-factor, and I do like his game. I don't know how closely
their games mirror each other, but he reminds me of Chris
       Herren—great 30 for 30 by the way.
Meanwhile, Klanjscek (or Klansman like Wincott called him a few
times in our first game) has really emerged for Maine, playing
major major minutes and really getting dialed in from three
(.447 in conference play). That's kind of been the theme for the
Black Bears as they're up over 35 percent from deep as a team,
with Masic, Klanjscek and Wright-McLeish really leading the way.
And with JWM, he was a defensive guy coming into the year, but
he's been a nice find for them offensively, coming into Sunday's
game having hit double digits in five of the last seven
contests. It helps that he barely ever leaves the floor—he's
second in the AE in minutes behind UNH's Tchoukuiegno (spelled
that without looking; need to get out more).
This is no gimmie, even if we have won 21 straight games in this
series. Maine's found a way to be kinda sorta in every
conference game but one or two, enough to make the opposition
uncomfortable. They've got something going with this nucleus. If
they stay together, is .500 in conference in play next year?
Maybe still a longshot but possible. There are times when we've
faced Maine and it's hard to take them seriously beyond a guy or
two—Fleming, El-Darwich and Calixte come to mind recently. If it
happens, it'll probably be the three ball that does it—that's
how they beat UNH and UA for their two conference wins.
It's been rocky the last couple weeks, even in victory. Let's
see if we can still take a lead and put a team away.

Jenkins didn’t make trip to Maine. He isn’t vacationing with
       Olaniyi, is he?

He didn’t play late against Lowell so I’m guessing it’s an
injury. Looked like an ankle in person but don’t know for sure.

Roberts tearing it up with 35, but I agree with announcer that
he needs to tone down the celebrations.

yep. he had a great game but what i saw was sayles open a lot
in the paint, and we got some easy dunks and buckets off the
dribble drive. doing that opened up traffic-free looks on the
perimeter. and so they fell, which is great.
of course, what good is any offense if the ensuing possession
goes the other way for a three, because you failed to close out
a shooter. but that's only if efficiency matters.
there's getting hot and then there's ONLY taking threes* against
5-18 maine when you're up 15 with a few minutes left. it was so
obvious even the color gal said it. this was a 9 point game
       late, that we could've blown.
*not to mention taunting, technical fouls, and trash talk

Kinda felt the team knew they could win at any time got sloppy
late. Good games by policelli Greene. Great game by roberts Geno
has to tell him to tone down the theatrics.

I forgot there was a game yesterday with the whole Super Bowl
and all. But I watched the replay this morning because I had saw
on social media that Anthony Roberts had 40 points and that
       immediately caught my eye.
Some of those threes weren't easy shots at all, but he was
really feeling it. He was stuck at 38 at the 6 min mark and got
a layup blocked, also didn't get another layup in time before
the shot clock, passed it to someone else while in the paint,
and missed the first 1-and-1 FT. If one or 2 of those things go
differently, you're talking about Warney's record being broken.
No offense to Anthony Roberts at all, he's great, but Warney's
record was so monumental to this program's history that I didn't
want to see it broken in some meaningless February regular
season game in Maine. Still, 40 points, man!

It’s hard for me to get worked up about anything following a
double-digit road win, no matter the opponent. We were limited
offensively without Jenkins, Roberts was feeling it, and he just
kept rolling. It seemed like the guys were wrapped up in the
whole thing so I’m glad they could enjoy that and hold their
heads high on the long ride home. Gotta like the six assists
       too.
