Why did the university have to announce their intention to leave
the conference now? It couldn’t have waited until the end of the
school year? If they were under no legal obligation to do so
then this was a Dumb & Dumber decision by our school prez and
AD.
If all else fails, I think the spring sports teams should
cancel their AE conference games and try to fill the schedule
with better competition. I dunno if that is feasible but if
they can’t participate in conference tourneys then why
participate at all in the AE this season?

The CAA announced it, not the schools themselves. I don't know
why the CAA couldn't wait until May, though. Obviously no one
from the Stony Brook side had any incentive to announce it
early, because this was predictable.

Take this with a grain of salt, but this was posted by a UA fan
on the Basketbalforum.com site:
" I can 100% say, factually (and I will not reveal how / why I
know this) that SBU did NOT have to announce this until May. In
fact, the plan was for end of June. For whatever reasons, and I
have strong suspicions but no evidence for this piece of the
puzzle, they chose to announce it now. The difference between
SBU and Monmouth/Hampton was that those schools had been
preparing for this for months and had also worked out deals with
their respective leagues.
SBU's admins flubbed this...full stop."
[/quote]
It's normal for conferences to announce these additions months
in advance. In the long run it won't mean much as we'll be out
of the AE, but it means everything to this senior class and
that's why we have a right to be upset. It really hurts the
women's basketball team more than anything. The Men's teams
weren't gonna beat Vermont anyway, and the LAX teams should be
able to secure at-large bids.
Would it have been great to hold this down until say April?
Sure, but it is what it is. Most realignment decisions are
announced like this months in advance. Either way you slice it
this is just some low level petty BS

on mlax, i wanted to add that the team has never secured an AL
bid. there was one year (2010) they probably were eligible but
won the AE anyway (and were torched at home by cornell). even
2011 they were ineligible (towson 10-9 loss). were close in
2005 (early harvard 9-8 loss), and 2016.
the AE has only once sent two teams (i think), which was UA and
BC. i forget which got what, and the year. probably in the
07-08 range.
wlax is a completely different story.

Interesting development today. I've seen some joint student
SBU/UIC petitions on Twitter to reinstate both SBU and UIC
(Horizon League) for post-season tournaments. No reference to
JMU in these petitions.
Lo and behold, the Horizon League has reversed course and
reinstated UIC for post-season tournaments:

Perhaps there is a glimmer of hope now for SBU, even though it's
an entirely different board of presidents who need to make that
decision. In any event, stay tuned. Things getting
interesting.
For what it's worth here is the link to sign the petition:

Further to the above, this is what UIC agreed to in a letter to
the board. I think this is a very fair compromise, and I hope
SH considers doing the same as a last ditch effort:

That final bullet point in the UIC agreement sounds like some
dictator worship crap and I will cringe if SBU sucks him off
just because we're being held hostage, even if it's necessary to
get our bid back.
"Yes, our mighty overlord Brad Walker, you are an awesome
commish and we are honored to have you. Thank you for being such
a kind gentleman."

yes, and its also the inverse of #2. we'll stop badmouthing
you, and change our tune to laudatory.
i guess when you have no leverage this is what you try. for all
we know the AD put it out to tell the kids- look, we tried
something.

Hey. A deal is a deal and UIC got it. I think both sides are
getting what they want.
I don't expect the AEC to do the same. But I hope SBU is doing
its due diligence to force the AEC's hand, if possible.
I know that BU was banned in the past. But the times are
different today. SBU should stress how the times have changed
and how the conditions are different today (COVID era) and maybe
get a deal out of this. Public outcry by student athletes does
help to pressure the AE.
Lets see how this ends
