If we and UVM were the top two candidates to win the AE this
year, I'd definitely have picked UNH to be the next one on the
list. And even looking at the record, I refuse to believe
they're just this mediocre team.
I don't love this spot for us. The game was moved up a day due
to the storm, so we're coming off a high effort, highly
emotional home game to jump on a bus and head north to a place
where we've struggled since Warney left. The last time we were
up there, we didn't score for the game's first eight minutes and
UNH rolled by 17. In the previous three games before that were
all decided by three points or less. We failed to shoot better
than 37 percent in any of those four games. I feel like we never
play well there, and it's not because the 400 fans in the stands
are making it tough on us.
UNH has just been OK this year. They had nearly a month off due
to COVID December 13 to January 6. And they've seen lukewarm
results to this point in conference, including a loss Monday at
Maine. This will be their fourth game in seven days, with just a
single day of preparation for the last three.
But they've got some horses, yet the two main guys, Martinez and
Guadarrama, have been a bit of an enigma this year. Guadarrama
had trouble shooting it in non-conference play, coming in shy of
25 percent from three, and that has more or less continued.
Martinez has had big nights and quiet nights throughout his
career, but he's been a little more consistent. Both present
tough matchups for us in that they're threats both inside and
out. Guadramma, who could play tight end for the football team,
is just a load, and Martinez can score at all three levels.
Blondeau's got nice numbers, but I don't see him on the same
level as Jenkins, Shungu, Cooks from last year, and front line
guys from years past. Nice player. He does lead the conference
in assists and that doesn't happen by accident, but it still
feels like Guadarrama and Martinez are the focus of the
opposition's scouting report.
UNH went real small on Wednesday against Maine, inserting Foster
into the starting lineup for big man Tayler Mattos. That's the
kind of lineup that we'll feature a lot, but you wonder if
Herrion tries to utilize their size advantage with Mattos, GW
transfer Sloan Seymour, and ageless Chris Lester in the middle.
BTW, Lester will be 25 in April [emoji15]
A milestone worth keeping an eye on: Jenkins is 48 points away
from 2,000 for his collegiate career. I'm thinking it happens
either against UNH or Lowell here at home.
There's just something about this game that I'm uneasy about.
There's a lot to like about UNH. They have the ability to be
physical, and they really work the offensive glass. They're
experienced, they've played together for a while, and they can
keep bringing quality options off the benchQon Murphy dropped
24 on us last year and he's like the seventh guy offensively. So
they're deep. And three-point shooting, which has been a pain
point in years past, is most definitely a strength at .382 as a
team. But beyond all that, this just feels like a big
opportunity for UNH to reinsert themselves into the discussion
as the best team besides UVM.

Nice write-up, Checkmate. I share your concern about playing
these guys. Another reason to be concerned - UNH is 7-0 at home
this year. Those 400 fans must be doing something right.

Got a little too relaxed lead down to 7 not shocked but need to
get back to the ball movement and defense from the first half.

Something tells me TSM owes Olaniyi a steak dinner. I think
Greene is their best overall player, but having a rough game tn.
Jenkins and Roberts are so talented.
