Vermont can't be that good, right?
The answer, unequivocally, is that yes, Vermont won't be that
good as they were two weeks ago—not tomorrow night and not for
the rest of the year. What we saw was near-perfect basketball,
and they almost seemed to feed off our frustration.
They haven't really stopped since though, steamrolling UMBC and
NJIT, and although it was only a 10-point win over Hartford,
that lead was 20 at one point, Hartford came all the way back to
take the lead, and then UVM pulled away. All told, they're 5-0
in conference, have won by an average of 20 points, and they've
shot 57 percent in those games. So they're definitely definitely
really really good. Just not that good.
Since our game, we've seen the emergence of Finn Sullivan, yet
another knockdown shooter who somehow made his way to Patrick
Gym. He went for 19 against us, and followed it up with 20- and
18-point nights in the two wins after that, thanks in most part
to shooting 16 FOR 23 (.696) FROM THREE. And you just wonder how
a California kid who spent three years somehow comes allllll the
way across the country, to a completely different climate, and
settles in. Becker has a way of finding guys, that's for sure.
I'd really wonder about some of these up-and-comers but ... this
is very likely Vermont's last trip to the island as a fellow
conference member. Kinda weird. Although hey! We win this one
and there's a tie at the top.
Vermont's good with wherever the game is—they're 7-18 all time
here, including wins in the last four. We haven't beaten them at
home since Warney put 43 and 10 on them. How about 38 big
minutes from the big man in that one? And 23 big points from
Puriefoy. I forgot we were down 15 with 15 minutes to go. Not
gonna lie: I thought we got a lot of calls that night.
I wonder if there's any extra juice in the Vermont locker room
with us leaving. Or if it's just whatever. This league's not
good enough for you? Upset that you can't win? Here's 100 points
on your defense. Eh, probably not. But I don't think there will
be any remorse for us after we went and threw a wrench in the
mix.
While I love the pieces we have, I am starting to worry about
our depth with Olaniyi out, the Shumperts gone, and Habwe's
situation unclear. We only went seven deep to beat Albany. If
Habwe's healthy, that's a good eight. But then we're real green
after that with Diallo, Christie, KRob and Pettway. Luckily, I
do feel like you can take any three from that first group of
seven or eight and find scoring somewhere. That hasn't always
been the case with us.
Let's see what we can do in the rematch. A win really sends a
message—yeah, you got us up in Burlington, but we're ready
tonight and we'll be ready the next time too.

Great post, Checkmate. IMO, 2 keys if we're going to win
tonight: 1) Habwe healthy and ready to go; 2) Fan Turnout which
can push us over the top. As of yesterday when I checked, lots
of tickets still left. Covid has really put a damper on crowd
size. Remember 2 years ago, couldn't grab a ticket 3-4 days
prior to the Vermont game.

annoucement got me excited about the Alma Mater.

NGL, I've been rarely watching us play this season after the
George Mason and Kansas games, but I'll be watching this one
tonight.
Let's give them one last beating before leaving the AE.

Nope. You can use Covid as an excuse and when you factor that in
it's actually a decent turnout from the looks of it, but yeah.
It'll be a long time until we see that place packed again.
