Fat chance. I talked to SH about this years ago when SBU had
money. He told me to donate 60 million dollars so they can build
an arena on campus. That's too bad because SBU Hockey is
consistently in the top 10 in the club league year after year,
and they could easily compete in the NCAA D1 .

They have the largest budget for any club on campus by far,
receiving over six figures from USG during the 2018-19 academic
year. That was bare minimum funding for random ice time at a
local rink and other costs. It's very, very expensive to build
and maintain a rink, and the demand for college hockey on Long
Island is nowhere near enough for SBU to even consider
attempting to get funding for it.

independent for much of our history, so the conference affiliate
was rather minor.

Not independent necessarily. More like your primary conference
will sponsor most of your sports but not all of them, so you
wind up being an affiliate member for various sports in
different leagues.

lacrosse-specific, but wanted to share here:

conferences are doing against each other. This year we actually
don’t have any teams playing as independents, which is a huge
step forward. The big reason I keep track of this is it helps
roughly gauge how many teams from each conference to expect in
the NCAA tournament at the end of the season. Unless you’re in
the Top 3 of conferences, you’re probably only sending one team.
There are some rare exceptions, but it does help to be aware of
what’s going on once everyone switches to conference games and
beat each other up.
