Very interesting. If that’s the case, with the backlash CAA
received for banning JMU, and the emphasis AE puts on
student-athletes, the presidents may hesitate to ban us during
this tough time with Covid.

second mention of athletics:
This invitation is a historic step for our institution
and a testament to our tremendous growth – both in academics and
athletics – over the last two decades," said President Maurie
McInnis. "Today would not be possible without the dedication of
our student-athletes and coaches, who have paved the way for
this moment. Our future is bright, and we look forward to
competing for CAA Championships for years to come!"
ill be a cynic and say this is lip service, but, this did happen
on her watch and i have to wonder if she was instrumental.
these conference shifts happen quickly these days...
I may be totally wrong, but it does feel like she didn’t
hesitate when the opportunity came. Which can only be good going
forward for future athletics related decisions.
These moves are always up to the presidents when all is said and
done. I'm still not convinced Maurie gives a rip about SBU
Athletics, but it's a no brainer to make a move from the 25th
ranked conference to the 13th ranked conference especially when
the geography is reasonable and we'll be competing against other
great schools (Northeastern, Delaware, W&M, Hampton, etc.)

Baseball and Softball teams must be very happy to have
conference games in the warmer south. CAA has teams with strong
baseball traditions.
Should be good for lacrosse teams too. Although I worry about
this year’s post season ban for women’s team.
As for basketball, we took being in the top 4 granted due to AE
having really poor bottom teams. In CAA if we don’t keep up it
will be easy to fall at the bottom.

With how dominant the W-LAX has been we should be able to get an
at-large bid to NCAAs, no?

I do want to believe in McGinnis, more than I should.

Spallina specifically gave first credit to her above all else in
his statement. Maybe just a formality, maybe it means that she
really was a big factor, who knows.

Little by little Stony Brook is finding its place in the college
athletics world. We just need a lot more loyal fans. Its so
difficult to grow the fan base.
I hope for better days with this entry to the CAA. A lot of
changes are down the pipe with the new NCAA constitution. Who
knows how things will be this July

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but if Spallina is publicly happy,
can we assume that it’s already been agreed to that WLAX (and
other sports) are safe with auto bids this year? And further,
wouldn’t it make sense for AE to have SBU represent them in NCAA
tournament for ongoing prestige of the conference?

Like I said above. If you are Spallina and WLAX team you
shouldn't worry too much about Auto-bid. Based on the last
decade they are an easy bet for an at-large. It's the other
teams that should be concerned (WBB, MBB, MLAX, BASE, SOFT)

technically wlax is a top 5 team, year in year out.
realistically, they are more like a #8-9, usually, or sometimes
better. yeah, that's confusing, but it just aint static.
short version- they should be eligible for a likely AL bid.
however, if the sched weakens, you lose the wrong big game, and
dont win the conference, you might be on the fence. these are
all doubtful- to me at least.

I just wish Hofstra didn’t block us in 2013. We ended up in CAA
anyway, just 9 years late. The territorial behavior has really
hurt the northeast from creating a true FBS conference. BC
blocking UCONN to ACC, NOVA blocking Temple to Big East. I think
close distance rivalry helps both schools. UNC/Duke/NC state
good example of three in close proximity yet prospering.
