Albany's new-look crew is rounding into shape just in time for
conference play.
After losing their first five games, UA has gone 6-5, winning
their last three, all of them have been by double digits. Like
so many teams, they're piecing it together with number of
transfers—Perry was a really strong reserve for Temple (although
sadly lost for the season), Cerruti had over 1200 points in
three seasons at Lock Haven, Newman was a solid piece in the
middle for Bucknell for four years. And with incumbents like
Horton, Doles and Trey Hutcheson, this team is OLD. And they're
big, particularly by America East standards.
The Perry loss was killer, and hampers a team that wasn't
terrific offensively to begin with. BUT you can't deny the
recent results produced by the committee behind him, including a
12-point win at UMBC earlier this week. They're playing hard for
first-year head coach Dwayne Killings, who was a local kid who
walked on at UMass back in the day and has his guys playing like
their job's no guarantee either. I think UA's going to want this
one in the 50s or 60s, and we haven't really gone up against
what I would call a hard-nosed, phone-booth kind of team.
Hey look, they have Cam Reddish's kid brother, Aaron. And Lari
Ketner's kid, Tairi. Awesome.
Can we just go out there and handle ourselves OK on the glass,
push the tempo, and beat them with our athletes? I'm still
worried about that first category, especially against a team
with a distinct size advantage, but I'm hoping that we can
counteract that with mismatches with our guards.
I'm getting the sense that we're going back to being without
Elijah. He has looked compromised, and somebody on the AE board
said he's done for the season. I sure hope not. Luckily we have
a lot of guys who have shown well with added minutes, and
they're also guys who can cover multiple positions, switch on D,
etc. Just like the Perry injury did for UA, this is an
opportunity that our guys should seize here.
I'm going to bet on our ability to put the ball in the basket
here, and doing just enough defensively to pull out a win.

I am looking forward to a living room full of friends and family
coming over tomorrow to watch football. While all that is going
on, I'll be staring at my phone watching SB-Albany.

I'll start some rumors here (pure speculation):
1) Injury recurring, and he just wants to get healthy (although
that doesn't warrant a leave of absence);
2) Like the Schumpert brothers, perhaps he has refused to get
vaccinated, and got the boot, and SBU is giving him time to
reconsider;
3) Maybe he's decided to go Pro. On his twitter feed, he has a
tweet from a week ago of UC Uroegbu in the G League, calling him
a late bloomer. Maybe he's gotten the itch;
4) Perhaps he is having a personal issue in his life. If so,
wish him the best;

That’s too bad wish him the best. Its a loss but can be replaced
by TSM/Policelli/Habwe stepping up i think all three are
capable.

That is a bit distressing, honestly.
We won a bunch of games without him and got dominated by Vermont
even with him, but it's still a big loss. Stephenson Moore will
get his minutes back, and he's had his moments this season when
Elijah was out earlier.
The injury already hampered what was supposed to be his going
out party, the reason he came back to Stony Brook for a fifth
year to begin with, but he just got back and didn't look hurt.
Doubt he'd take a whole leave of absence if he was just hurt
again.
My first thought? He didn't come back to Stony Brook to be the
third option behind Jahlil Jenkins and Anthony Roberts. He came
off the bench for the UMBC game (he did Maine too, but that was
off of injury, so I get it), which might have been the final
straw. Geno said he was going to tinker the lineup based on
advanced analytics and +/-. IDK what Elijah's +/- was for the
Vermont game but it can't have been any good if he got benched
for UMBC.

Olaniyi is a train wreck and he should not even look back in his
rearview mirror. Just sail away into the sunset.
What a total waste of a scholarship he turned into be.

Accelerator your thoughts are spot on. He was the third probably
fourth option. Now I believe Greene should be more of a priority
than Roberts. Simply because the ball doesn’t stick as much when
Greene has it. I understand Roberts 1 on 1 skillset but i get
tired of the 1 on 3 drive to the basket.

Airturn, do you know this for certain? If true, there are a
couple of angles here. In defense of Geno, Olaniyi quit on him
once, and Geno wasn’t going to bend over backwards for him,
especially since he recruited Jenkins, Roberts, Greene, who are
all individual talents. From Olaniyi’s standpoint, the only
reason he returned to sbu was to win PoY and a championship,
which may have aided him in his pursuit of a pro contract
somewhere.
I did note in an early game this year, that Olaniyi was
definitely upset that he wasn’t getting the ball. But his
injury set him back, and I did wonder how he was going to be
integrated back into an offense that had a couple of good games,
and was getting better.
Given his injury, and the certainty that he wasn’t going to get
PoY, maybe he decided to pull the plug, and cut his losses. If
so, I think it’s a net negative for the team, but certainly a
positive for TSM personally.
Again, if this is a personal issue, apologies to him on this
theory.

If that's true, I could not be more disappointed in Elijah.
Nothing justifies quitting on your team in the middle of a
season because of an ego struggle. No one here likes Geno, me
included, but I find it difficult to put the blame on him in
this situation. This was the only thing he could have done to
completely piss on his own legacy here as one of the best
players to ever play for Stony Brook, because no one's going to
speak positively about him ever again here.
Hope he reconsiders within the next few weeks.
