Don't look now, but we are looking up at Binghamton in the
America East standings.
Binghamton's been about as bad as you can get over the last
decade, ever since the Kevin Broadus recruiting scandal left the
cupboard bare for a probably overmatched Mark Macon, who granted
was in a no-win situation. There's reason for optimism under
first-year coach Lavell Sanders, with a nice group of young guys
who appear energized to turn this thing around.
Just like it has been for us, the transfer market's been kind to
Binghamton. Falko has come in and FAR exceeded expectations I'd
say. He was mainly a D-II guy out of high school but averaged 18
a night in junior college before advancing to D-I Gardner-Webb
and finally BU. He has really sneaky athleticism, with the
ability to go by defenders, which is exactly what he'd prefer to
do, as he's more of a scorer than a shooter. And he may play all
40 minutes; he did on Sunday.
Falko and McGriff are the perfect complement to what Binghamton
brought back, which was shooting in guys like Bertram, Bryce
Beamer and Dan Petcash, who bombed threes on us the last time we
played. I suspected that McGriff would be the guy, and he still
may be, but he's probably not an 18 a night kind of kid. McGriff
was a three-star recruit who played minimally at St. John's as a
freshman but has found a nice landing spot where he can play
major minutes. He's not as dynamic a scorer as Sam Sessoms was,
or the same type of player the Brenton Mills (now of Bowling
Green) was, but he's a really nice get for the program. He can
defend too—so a nice showdown with Jenkins awaits.
I like to think about assignments when writing these things up,
and I keep coming back to who's going to stay in front of
Roberts—maybe I'm too high on him. For Binghamton, I don't know
who that guy is. Hinckson probably gets the first crack at it. I
still look at the lineups and feel like there are so many
athletic mismatches. Our main job is going to be running guys
off the three-point line. We can guard these guys one-on-one,
yet if you leave a shooter like Petcash or Bertram open, we
could really pay the price. Bertram dropped seven threes on
Columbia earlier this year.
We should really laud the shooting improvement from Greene and
Policelli since last season. Greene has from .299 to .391 from
deep, and Policelli's up even more, going from .319 to .414. I
gotta think that's the result of many many hours in the gym,
working with coaches and getting up shots. Who'd you really
trust last year—JRod and that's about it? This year it just
feels like we have several more options. Now making sure they're
quality looks is for a different day. But the marksmanship is
there I feel like.
Binghamton used to be a doormat, but things are a little
different now. They have something going. I still think we're
going to be trouble for most AE teams athletically, and maybe we
struggle more with phone-booth type games (see Lowell; I can
just sense it). Let's see how we do here.

I don't care that they won. That means nothing to me. They had a
wide lead late at the end of the game and then nearly pissed it
all away again. These games that should be easy fodder for
getting our KenPom rating back up are instead making us fall
further back. Again, not the first time this has happened. I'm
tired of the inability to close out games.

Some really poor shots down the stretch. Absolutely hated the
flat footed 3 from Jenkins when we were up 6 late, Geno has to
earn his pay and throttle these bad shots and manage the game
better down the stretch. Seriously, only thing that saved us was
4 clutch free throws at the end. A win is a win, but I agree,
should have won this by 10.

How many times has this team let bad teams back into the game
late? Bryant, St Peter's, Maine and now goddamn Binghamton all
made the final score somewhat close despite large leads late in
the 2nd half. One time, fine, Geno. But this is the fourth time
in a month! Fix your sh*t!
