Both conference title hopefuls and both come into this licking
their wounds after having threes rain down on them courtesy of
Vermont.
We had been on a pretty good roll before our loss, winning eight
of 10, whereas it seems as though UMBC is still trying to find
themselves under first-year coach Jim Ferry (formerly of LIU,
Duquesne and Penn State for a period). They enter having lost
six of seven, and five of those losses have come by double
digits against teams like Delaware, Princeton and UNC
Greensboro.
I refuse to be fooled though. Yes, they had to backfill via the
transfer market after many players (Horvath, Eytle-Rock, Lamar,
Akin) left following Ryan Odom's departure for Utah State (good
to see Horvath is their second leading scorer). But we've seen
these core guys for so long, and a lot of them have had a hand
in the Retrievers' recent success against us. Since our 18-game
win streak in the series ended, UMBC has won six of nine,
including the last three.
Kennedy is easily their most dynamic player talent-wise—he's a
little like Roberts in that you have to respect both his ability
to shoot and to take his defender off the dribble. I don't know
that he's this cold-blooded scorer, and he was on the outskirts
offensively at UMBC the last two years, but he's taken on more
responsibility in light of the departures. In terms of who gets
the assignment, I'm wondering if it's Roberts or Olaniyi;
thinking the latter. And then Jenkins/JRod on Rogers and vice
versa oughta be good.
This feels like a big Jenkins day for me. He's just 6 for his
last 27 from three, and I like this spot for him to rebound. I
also like Policelli as an odd matchup on the perimeter for their
bigs.
It's not like they're going to sit around waiting for him to do
something though—very much a team effort. We've seen Dimitrije
Spasojevic come in here and have a career day. Szymon Wojcik is
coming off a 22-point night against Vermont. Owens is a
secondary guy so I don't know that he's going to come in and
drop 32 on us like Will Darley did years ago, but you can't
overlook .492 from deep (and he's 10 for 16 in conference play).
And I like their offense—a LOT of screens and movement without
the ball. And they take and make a LOT of free throws, including
a season high 27 attempts in their 10-point win at Pitt earlier
in the year. Awesome win.
One of the things that the Vermont people have said is that SBU
quit up in Burlington, whereas UMBC continued to fight and kept
it respectable. They were down 30-7 seven minutes in on
Saturday, and outscored them the rest of the game. We fell
apart. I'm hoping that we can rebound with a 40-minute effort on
Monday. AND I'm hoping that the crowd isn't bad—4pm tip, the
kids are off, it fits in nicely before dinner. The only problem
is it's a makeup, so we'll see if the area comes out for it.
This one feels like a toss-up. A week ago, UMBC went into
unbeaten NJIT and dominated. They have the ability to sneak out
of here with a win too, but I still feel like we have an edge
talent-wise to take it.

Is it just me or does Elijah lose his man for an open 3 on
defense a lot? Felt like so many times in the Vermont game he'd
go down to double in the post and leave his man for an open 3.
Noticed that a lot before he transferred out as well. For as
good of a 1-on-1 defender as he is it seems like he gives up a
lot of points.

Not sure specifically about Elijah but this year in my
estimation SB gives up close to 10 easy points a game due to
defensive breakdowns (and never makes up for it on the offensive
end)...it could also be because there is no longer anyone like
Mo helping out down low as a last line of defense.

Very unusual starting lineup. We must be undermanned.

Give Geno credit, he has these guys firing on all cylinders
today. Only down 11 ten minutes in.

Good effort on the defensive end. Would like to do better than 6
assists and 21% from 3 but we'll take the 14 pt win. @bingo and
@UA need to be wins.
