Solid article that identifies the problems, but no real
solutions offered. Here’s another suggestion: Make Sports
Administration compensation a function of attendance. Then, and
only then, will this become a high priority in the department.

ive gone on and on about this, so i appreciate the topic. in
fact we have an entire thread based on it with some proposed
       solutions.
in the 80s it was "do they even have a team?", in the 90s it was
"stony brook recruits?", then it was "stony brook gives
scholarships?", now its what the article says, "don't they
       suck?". this is not new.
while disaffection is certainly an issue, you cant fix that with
no one on campus. can't leave your room if youre not IN your
       room.
i was there a few weeks ago. silent on fri and sat night. all
lights in nearly every dorm off. they all took the train 50
miles west on thursday afternoon, to return sunday night. when
i say ALL, i nearly mean ALL.
and its the reason we lose recruits, athletes, students, money,
alums, merchandising, fans, tv deals, etc.
i have my doubts that the word is not out, what with social
media and phones. athletics is doing its job. there's just too
many distractions, coupled with bad weather, and a rigorous
academic schedule. not to mention athletics have taken a few
blacks eyes in the past years, whether it's CTE, scandals,
drugs, violence, expenses, favoritism, or just general thuggery
       of the spectator sports.
again the issue isnt email and marketing. its that no one's on
campus. we could have 100k students; on weekends it's more like
we have 100 students. it's not the athletic dept. its the
       student body.
commuters aint the problem because there are still over ten
       thousand beds on campus.
you could require students live on campus, and they'll still go
home on weekends. so that's not it.
the greek housing i think is on to something- that would do much
for social life, though, LI and its citizens being so insular,
it'll never be like you see it on tv. it also brings about the
blight, alcohol related deaths, drugs, town vs gown, and bad PR
       at times.
great article though and love the discussion on the MOST
important topic affecting SB today- student life. bigger than
fiscal, bigger than covid. this is the entirety of what's
holding us back from even being a peer of UCLA, mich, tex, and
uva. bravo to jeremy and ethan for putting this all together
and doing something to make our U better.
if you really want to get to the heart of this problem, first
keep the kids on campus. then lets worry about getting them out
       of their dorms.

Listen, fellas. Don't take what I am about to say with any heart
of prejudice or racism. It is what it is.
My son is a Junior at SBU. I live 1 mile away from campus and I
occasionally drop my son off at school and pick him up, when his
truck is not running properly, and I am a long time season
ticket holder of football and used to be men's basketball, but I
dropped that a couple of years ago..
There are more Asian and more foreign students on that campus
than ever before. I really don't care what SBU demographics
numbers say, but my son and I talk about this often The
percentage of white students enrolled at SBU are well below 50%.
I see it and he knows it too.
Asians, Indians, and Packastanians don't like American sports.
It's as simple as that. The reason we are seeing fewer students
on campus and fewer students at games is because SBU went WOKE
and decided to enroll more foreign students from abroad. Is it
all for money or just to be all diversified or both? I don't
       know the answer to that.
You can't blame the athletic department for this. But you can
blame the NYS SUNY Chanselor and President for their decisions
to bring in mostly foreign students and not your typical
American. Black, and white students like in the past....
American-born students of all colors love Football, Baseball,
Basketball, and now Lax. How many Asians watch our boy's and
       girls' Lax games? Zero.
I know some of you will be ignorant and take what I wrote the
wrong way. It's the way this country is right now, divided. But
the fact remains. My neighborhood is filled with foreigners who
moved to NYC first and some now live in my backyards. I don't
have an issue with any of them. They don't bother me and they
       came here with money.
Actually, we are friends with our neighbors who are from South
Korea. I am trying to get them to watch Football. Thats not
happening.. That's not what this topic is about. It's about why
No students go to Stony Brook games. It's because they don't
care about our American culture and about sports. They are here
       for our education, period...

without getting into policy- and in an attempt to avoid a touchy
subject on this forum- what do you guys think. even if the
above is factually correct, that non-US students don't watch
american sports, couldnt you argue there are still over 10,000
american students left over to form a following?
i guess im getting after the larger point- country of origin
aside, SB has a student disaffection problem, that spreads like
       a virus.

Politics aside, the large contingent of foreign students is
nothing new. Back in the olden days (70's and 80's) there was a
very high percentage of Asian students. Stony Brook will always
claim diversity and getting the brightest in the world to come
to SBU (and that's partially true), but in reality, they get a
ton of $ from foreign students, subsidized by foreign
governments, with the exception being grad programs. Money is
always #1, and looking overseas brings a ton of cash to the
university. Given that reality, I don't think SBU does enough
in attempt to integrate foreign students into the social
atmosphere of the university. The foreign kids typically hang
with the foreign kids; I'm sure nothing has changed in that
       regard.
All that said, I was very active in SBU's robust intramural
program, and I have to say, when it came to hoops, a lot of the
Chinese and Korean students had really, really good basketball
teams, and always participated. I remember my team losing
(badly) to an all-Chinese-student team in the playoffs one year.
What I'm trying to say is that I don't think it's foreign kids
not interested in basketball. In football and lacrosse that's
different; it would sort of being like you/I being interested in
going to a cricket match - prob not gonna happen.
I think we all agree with CoB that a weekend morgue is not
conducive to fan attendance. Sure, that needs to get fixed.
However, I'll disagree with some in that I think the onus is
squarely on the shoulders of the athletic department to boost
attendance, and they need the support of the President to
accomplish this. They do a nice job with SM, but those
subscribing are already fans. There needs to be a better
outreach into converting non-fans into fans; both on and off
campus. Success certainly breeds interest, but building a fan
base takes work; hard work! We do have an entire thread with
suggestions; but it takes hard work (and some $) to implement a
lot of these ideas. If they've laid off 20 people in the last
year, that should be the warning shot to SH (and his team).
It's time to get off the pot, and make it happen. If McGinnis
isn't happy with attendance (and she shouldn't be), it's time to
shake things up by hiring someone who squarely takes on that
challenge, and it needs to be a function of performance
       (attendance, winning, etc.), IMO.

I would like to add one more thing about foreign students at
SBU. My son just informed me of how many Mainly Asians are still
afraid of covid and walking around campus and in classrooms with
masks. He said they arent congregating around groups of people
anymore since covid. That is another thing that is going to
hurt SB sports, mainly Basketball for the Asians. You can thank
NYS politicians for that with thier extra cautionary laws in

Thanks for posting that Air.. As you can see the percentage of
Asians has more than doubled since the early 1990s. and I'll
guess that it more than 5 fold from the late '70s and '80s.
These numbers will only continue to move up. SBU athletics is
going to be in a world of hurt if they continue on this
projectory. Might as well jus go back down to D3

       That is a stunning #, for a NYS-subsidized school, unless that #
is largely comprised of Asian-Americans. Assuming that it's
largely overseas student, I think that corroborates my $
economic argument, stated above. With state budgets a mess, and
the economic fallout from Covid, is SBU making this demographic
       decision to say afloat?

i didnt read the fine print but are we talking US students of an
       origin or actual foreign students?
regardless, it makes sense to me because SB draws heavily off of
the outer boroughs, which have higher proportions of minorities
       and/or immigrants.
but again i think there's still enough of a student body to
support athletics. 10k students is more than many schools have
at all. why can't we do it?
