“Seawolves rock, Seawolves rule” makes me want to puke.
Again, study the P5 and model after them. Don’t try to be
       quirky.

Like I said earlier. Their fight song is like a high school
       team.
If SBU wants to be taken seriously then the time is now to make
huge changes from within the athletic department. Put on your
big boys pants and be tough, tough on the competition, and tough
on changing out the old childish, Seawolf mascot look and get
       into something more respectable

well, i wanted lively discussion, and got it!

but more importantly, this was a way of taking the fans'
temperature. of course this isnt a cross section (few students
here? parents???) but was helpful to get reactions.

Personally I wouldn’t want to change Seawolves either. Probably
that’s what I knew when in college, and lame or not, I just
can’t think of us other than Seawolves. But I’m pretty sure
those who knew the Patriots feel the same way and hated the
       change to Seawolves.
One thing we can all agree on is this “What’s a Seawolf?” BS.
       Get rid of this. Horrible.

Changing the mascot for a 3rd time in a lifetime is silly.
Can we rewrite the fight song? Sure, I don't care as much about
       that.
But the mascot? who does that. There are schools that literally
have something as silly as "Crimson Tide" or "Hoya"... WTF is
that. But they will never change it
Stony Brook Seawolves is just fine. It is somewhat unique too as
only one University uses it (Alaska Anchorage)
Now, if you want to change the look of Wolfie the Seawolf as
part of a larger rebranding effort - that's all good with me.
You guys are trying too hard to keep up with everyone else
risking destroying the little bit of tradition we have in place.
The only schools that change mascot are those that have
       offensive mascots

Personally I can't see the school rebranding (nor do I think
they should), we aren't even the only team to be named the
Seawolves (University of Alaska Anchorage, and an Orlando based
       indoor soccer team)
IF they did however, I would much prefer a revert to an identity
as the Baymen, less generic/oversaturated and has a connection
to the school's location and the maritime history of the
       location.
The fight song is terrible. No argument there despite my own
ironic love for it. Every person I know who has heard it calls
it something along the lines of "embarrassing", one of the many
things around the sports programs that needs to be revamped imo.
I have to say that in regards to the move to the CAA, I think
I'll miss having two SUNY rivals in Bing and Albany (although we
crush both schools on pretty much every level)
Who knows, maybe the rivalry with Hofstra will be good for us
and prove to be a fun match up.
(Total irrelevant side note but I've been lurking on here for a
while but just made an account. For context I'm a current SBU
       freshman)

Welcome, Statistra! Nice to have a current student amongst us.
Personally, I'm fine with "Seawolves", but I must say, I find
your suggested name of "Baymen" to be intriguing. I went to
school at SBU when we were known as the "Patriots", and it took
some time to digest "Seawolves", but it has grown on me over the
years. As far as the fight song is concerned, I guess I'm
probably too old - didn't even know we had one. Good luck at
       school!

Welcome to the board Statistra! It’s really nice to see a
freshman here. Hope you make a lot of good memories at the Bball
       arena and Lavalle stadium!

welcome! great to have you and we need more student presence.
feel free to PM me to chat more. and get your buddies to join!
i love the baymen, but, have considered the world's...
temperature, on this topic. so that wont work.
oldie- the fight song i think was created only in the last 10-15
       years or so.
it seems just having the conversation here (which should really
be a new thread) has increased participation! im just glad we
are even discussing, and as we can all see, we are pretty
divided on this topic. which is good and fosters healthy
       dialog. GO SB

Very interesting article. The rich get richer, no surprise
there. Hard to tell what would happen if the Power 5 "secedes".
If there's any precedent, recall that European soccer was going
to secede and create a super-league with the backing of JP
Morgan, and the proletariat backlash was so severe, that the
entire plan was scrapped. Not saying that'll happen here, but
should be interesting in how it plays out.
