Big, big spot for us early on. Are we contenders or pretenders?
Shungu is really a great story. He's a Burlington kid who walked
on at UVM and has really worked his way up the food chain in
what is now his sixth season. He has been more of a defensive
guy, winning AE DPOY in 2020 and making the All-Defensive Team
last year (behind Gueye). But he's really blossomed into a
scorer. Last week, he dropped in a career-high 29 against UNH,
and he's had some other big nights throughout the year (27
against Maryland, 20 against Providence, 19 against Northern
Iowa). Those last three are the three highest ranked teams UVM
has faced, and UNH is a big-time conference opponent, so Shungu
       appears to relish these opportunities.
With our team this year, I keep wondering if another Kendall
Lauderdale game is coming. If you recall, a few years ago, this
bull of a kid at Albany, with very very little production to
that point, just backed us down on seemingly every possession
and we had no answer. He went for 17 and 9 that night, better
than the 3 and 2 he averaged in every other game. UA would bully
us sometimes; not sure UVM has the personnel to do it to that
extent, but we are still light inside, and Davis presents a
mismatch in a few ways. He's a knockdown shooter if you give him
space AND can put it on the floor some, so a difficult mark for
Sayles, and he also has 35 pounds on Policelli down low. I can't
remember how we tried to match up with him last year. He's a
pretty awesome weapon for Becker to have.
I'm interested to see who Jenkins covers. Vermont has BIG guards
between Shungu, Mazzulla, Finn Sullivan and Robin Duncan. And on
the flipside, can Jenkins go by those guys or get them on their
heels? It does go both ways.
DYK: A Hoopcat (as they call them) has won the conference POY in
each of the last five years. Trae Bell-Haynes twice, Lamb twice,
and Davis has a shot at repeating too. Before them, we had a run
with Brenton and then Warney for three years.
UVM has not shown to be a terrific three-point shooting team at
under 30 percent for the season. But they may be rounding in to
shape, and with the lighter schedule coming up compared to their
non-con slate, I have to think that number comes up.
I think we can go ahead and call ourselves the quicker, more
athletic team. That's going to be most nights in this league. I
wonder how we approach it though. Jenkins, Roberts, Olaniyi and
Greene are four really talented players—probably the best
quartet in the league. But can we battle inside with, say,
Olaniyi or Greene at the 4? And Policelli at the 5? Or are three
of that first four on the floor at the all times, and you have
Policelli and Sayles? My sense is that we're comfortable going
small against anybody and counting on our guards to rebound. And
they definitely can. This game should also be fun because both
of these teams have formidable benches.
Vermont could be favored by double digits at the tip, but I
think we're right there with them.

If vermont is favored by double digits I might place a small
wager on Stony brook. The davis matchup does concern me though.

I thought Colin Castleton at Florida would torch us for 35
points and 15 rebounds and he didn't come to close to that, so
I'm remaining cautiously optimistic about Davis. He'll probably
hit around his season average with us.

I think policelli can battle with him but he lacks the weight
and sayles lacks the foot speed. But if anyone saw that UNH
Vermont game Greene must guard shungu or else jahlil will get
       hunted.

on that note, i did notice we have a sometimes lack of
athleticism on defense. some of our players play flat footed,
dont jump, let players run around them, etc. we should exercise
our depth here and get more intensity!
of course, too physical and you get foul trouble, what with
today's officiating... i think our physicality is just right.

I would take the points too but that would only guarantee a
       Vermont blowout.

I’d definitely take the points, but NYS sportsbooks prohibit
betting on NY college teams (at least DraftKings does). Davis
is the guy I worry about, but I don’t want Policelli guarding
him. Sayles or Habwe in my book. On paper, we’re way more
athletic, but we’ll see how this plays out. Wish we were more in
gaming rhythm (recent games played) going into this one.
