A little matinee basketball! I'm not sure the workplace is going
to like it, but I will.
We always talk about wanting to play the toughest non-conference
opponents we can to ramp up for AE play. Well, here's one of
those juggernauts. Let's see if we can stay with them.
The obvious first question is: how'd they do it? How did winless
Texas Southern steamroll the Gators? Because we're a lot closer
to the SWAC than we are the SEC, so it'd be a significant upset
if we pulled this thing out. First of all, let's not completely
dismiss Texas Southern. They won an NCAA tournament game last
year, they're picked to win the conference, and they have a
bunch of high-major transfers. AND they played an absolute
murderer's row to start the season. How about a team-high 16
points from Hartford transfer PJ Henry!
But I know, I know: they were 23.5 point dogs for a reason. To
close that gap, they shot the heck out of it—54 percent from the
field, most of it from inside the arc (just 5-11 from deep). But
the most noticeable stat disparity is on the glass. TSU won that
battle, 46-23. Their forwards really crashed the glass, racking
up 17 second-chance points. And it also contributed to a 42-26
edge on paint points—and this is with one of the nation's best
shot blockers (Castleton) in there. It wasn't just the bigs for
TSU. The guards were not shy in going to the goal, either with
the ball or with back cuts over and over. Florida's trademark is
pressuring the ballhandler, but TSU combated that overpursuit
with well timed cuts and passes. Awesome win for the program and
conference.
Florida's going to be fine though. They really get after it on
the defensive end, so we can't be throwing the ball all over the
gym. UF will pick us up 94 feet out and apply the pressure. I
think we've had our ups and downs handling the press, but if
we're going to have a shot, we can't be giving up extra
possessions and easy points with any frequency. Florida's
forcing more than 17 turnovers a night, and if we can finish
around there, I think that's a good night all things considered.
TSU was able to handle the press, and they didn't get completely
sped up.
This ball pressure will be interesting for us. They seem to have
just guy after guy—Fleming, Jones, Brandon McKissic, Elijah
Kennedy, etc—who can just get after it. We have been reliant on
the three at times, and with Gators in their faces on the
perimeter, teams aren't taking or making many threes. Nobody's
made more than eight in a game this year, and altogether,
opponents are averaging 4.5 made threes per night. That's
absolutely unheard of for me. How's that jive with what we're
trying to do, and have shown to do?
The first three of those aforementioned guards are transfers
this year, bringing significant experience and playing
significant minutes. Same for CJ Felder, who I like as a
multi-dimensional forward.
But it's in all in support of Castleton, who's a really nice
piece in the middle. Offensively, he's not the most explosive
and he's a little stiff, but he's strong with his back to the
basket, but he's also comfortable putting it on the floor and
scoring inside or mid-range. You'll see him screen and roll from
the top of the key. I'm not sure we have somebody who can defend
him one-on-one in the post, so I could see us bringing the
double team and making him pass out of it. Because if Florida
has a flaw, it's their shooting. It's not terrific. Jones shot
it well at Penn State, and Appleby last year at UF, but they're
at just 31 percent from deep as a team.
Main themes for me: We're going to need to keep our cool and get
on the glass. I can see how it would be easy to let this game
get away from you if the turnovers mount, but we have guards who
have played in some big games. Offensively, we've been able to
go up and down, but this is one team who can match our
athleticism. I really would like to see us run our offense and
look for a quality shot deeper into the possession rather than a
bad one early.
Never know.

Just covering the -15.5 (or -17.5) would be a win in my eyes.
Are we going to play like we did the 2nd half last game (similar
to 3 prior games), or the 1st half, where ball movement was
stagnant and we were launching out-of-rhythm 3's? Geno has to
impress on the kids to move the ball; that has been a very
successful recipe for this team of late.
Wonder if Christie will get 10-15 against their big Center?

I agree with Ye Olde Seawolf. I'll be happy to stay within the
number (Good teams win, great team cover). We won't be facing
many 6'11" centers in conference play so if he bullies us I
won't take too much stock in the result. I wouldn't hate if this
turns into a 3 point shooting contest. Hopefully sayles/christie
and absorb Castleton down low and free Frankie up to shoot
threes.

I think Castleton is too athletic for him. He can put it on the
floor or shoot it. I shudder to think how Christie would defend
that, so I'd imagine spot minutes at most.
I wonder if we play any zone. I'd sag on these guys and get all
hands on deck for the rebound.
The line's up to 19.5 in some places. I'd take the points if I
had to.

Elijah’s status is listed as “undetermined” according to the UF
game notes. I’m guessing that means out—although it’d be awesome
to see him back out there.

Checkmate, they said at the beginning of the St. Peter's
Broadcast that he'll be returning for AE play. Could have used
him today for sure, but resting him this game and next week
(Farmingdale D3) probably makes the most sense.

The reporter from the statesman asked about Elijah in the
presser after the St Peters game and Coach Ford said he's
walking without the crutches now but has not begun basketball
activity yet so there will be a build up. Looking at the
schedule the first big test will be @Vermont on 1/12 so I'm
hoping Elijah is available for that one.
