Edit: This one's a little scatter-brained.
Bryant, which was picked to finish second in the NEC, is doing
things a little differently than last year when it averaged 84
points a night and ranked sixth nationally in tempo and 17th in
average possession length per KenPom. The 21-22 Bulldogs come in
at 71 points per game thanks to ranking 55th in pace and 103rd
in possession length. They had the perfect guy last year for
that frenetic pace last year in Michael Green III, but he
transferred to Robert Morris of all places. The core of the team
is still intact, but they don't have a guy like Green who was
just a blur with the ball.
They haven't shot the three well at all so far—under 30
percent—but they have the shooters to get out of that funk if we
aren't careful. Kiss shot 51 percent from deep last year but
he's down at 23 percent so far. Pride—42% last year, 30% this
year. You could attribute some of that to the competition—Bryant
has taken on four top 100 teams (and gotten manhandled by all of
them)—but it's been almost across the board really.
Kiss has had some journey. He was a MAAC All-Rookie selection at
Quinnipiac back in the 2016-17 season, transferred to Rutgers,
sat a year, made only modest contributions over the next two
years, transferred to Bryant and has turned into a star up
there, earning first team all-NEC in the preseason. He's one of
those guys that you'd love on your team but would get jeered by
every opponent's crowd. He's got an appetite for the scoring
column and can do it from wherever—dribbling and finishing at
the tin, mid-range, by moving without the ball, dribbling or
running around a million screens. And the three if he can find
his stroke. And Kiss is a pretty good passer too. So it's going
to be a tough assignment for I'm guessing Roberts.
What I like about this matchup is how closely the roster mirrors
Hofstra—a lot of shooting, a lot of rebounding guards, probably
a pretty quick pace even with Bryant dialing it back. In the
halfcourt, they aren't going to throw the ball into Elisias and
GMU transfer Greg Calixte—their two biggest guys at 6-8—and beat
us to a pulp. It's not a huge team. BUT ... they do get after
it. They outrebounded UNH (albeit without Guadarrama) 45-25 on
Saturday in a 17-point rout. They've hit the offensive glass
pretty hard—and also given up second-chance opportunities—so
that will be something to watch on Saturday.
One advantage they do have is rim protection in Elisias. He's
ranked ninth in the country with 3.4 blocks a game. Side note:
the nation's leader is a 6-8 guy from Marshall who rejects 4.89
a night :o . But one thing about Elisias is that he's foul
prone. He's already gotten DQ'd three times this year, the same
number as last year. One of those early exits came against us.
This was supposed to be a homecoming for Miles Latimer, who
evidently transferred to Bryant from Bucknell, but he's not on
the roster.
It is a homecoming for Bryant HC Jared Grasso, who starred at
St. Anthony's in the mid '90s before going on to a HOF career at
Quinnipiac.
Just like I thought the Hofstra game would test our mettle after
a blowout loss, I want to see how our guys respond after a
blowout win. That had to feel pretty good, right? But can we
match the efficiency and intensity against a veteran Bryant
team? I mean, we had 20 offensive rebounds on Wednesday—a rarity
but a stat that helped us beat South Carolina and Rutgers in
years past, and let's not downplay the magnitude of the Hofstra
win either. Even better, we really hunkered down on D. I'll
repeat a stat from the previous game post—Estrada, Ray and
Silverio went 3 for 29 (3 for 18 from three, 0 for 11 from two).
That is a HELLuva defensive effort. We passed the ball well and
shots undoubtedly went down ... but we can't count on that kind
of marksmanship every night. But really we won as a result of
our defense and effort on the glass. Let's see if we can do it
again.

Peter Kiss is a name that's been around for a while. If memory
serves, Stony Brook offered on him back in 2014, which must have
led to him transferring to rutgers when pikiell got the job
there. Side note: wonder if Ford sticks with Sayles in the
starting lineup or goes with Policelli or Habwe as the 5.

Latimer is still at Bucknell. He committed to Bryant back in
September and can't transfer until the Fall semester ends. He
will be enrolled at Bryant for winter courses.

We seem to be having trouble with their zone. Need to be more
fluid moving the ball, like we did first 15 mins of game.

Overall, a good win against a tough, undermanned Bryant club.
Those first 15 mins was a continuation of that Hofstra 2nd
half-exceptional ball movement and great shooting. We’re still
rebounding-challenged, but we have so many offensive weapons in
Jenkins, Roberts, JRod, Greene, Habwe, Policelli, TSM. Jenkins
and Roberts are really growing on me, esp since they’re starting
to share the ball more, and neither are afraid to take the big
shot,
