Second semester it will pick up

If I was in charge, I'd fix the attendance problem in 1 month.
I've made some suggestions on this board on how to rectify, but
it's largely on the shoulders of the athletics department to
execute in that capacity. It would take a concerted effort, and
needs to be driven from the top dog down. Covid may be a
hindrance, but you can't use that as a scapegoat endlessly.
That empty student section on TV stuck out like a sore thumb.
That said, great win last night - let's see if we can build from
       it.

agreed on that oldie- would you mind reposting or linking to
       your suggestions please?
id add that this isnt entirely on the athletic dept, as student
apathy is larger than just athletics, but yes they are part of
it. i think it has to go all the way up to mcinnis, and well we
all know what her priorities have NOT included... ::)

Here are some posts/suggestions that I made that really pertain
to athletics on how to build fan interest and have a reduce
student athletic apathy. Some may require buy-in from the
University (McGinnis), but much can be addressed by the
       Athletics department:

yes, i recall that post. a good one! still true after 4 years
       too.
to me, what's so interesting is that these arent even the
difficult measures. find an intern and/or asst coach (a
football fanatic) to help with the digital magazine, give free
tickets to HS programs that bring 10 or more players. tuition
isnt that big that we can't offer it for a few home games. with
the internet staying on top of local HS football is even easier.
bonuses for staff somewhat "pay for themselves".
i wonder if we have pushed for News12 and Newsday and it never
took off. i wonder what that entails to make that happen...

It requires leadership from the top, but much can be implemented
by underlings, as you and I suggest. Perhaps Athletics
leadership has become too complacent and too comfortable with
their situations. Perhaps Athletics leadership is hitting
roadblocks with University management. I don't know the
internal situation. All I know is that despite personal
shortcomings, Fiore was a marketer! Pikiell was a marketer!
You need those types leading to implement those types of ideas,
to create the buzz, and create a frenzy. It does take the right
types to lead in that capacity. McGinnis may be missing the
big picture if she doesn't see the value of a strong Athletics
department contributing to the overall value of the SBU brand.
Academics first, for sure, no question about that. But
Athletics is an important piece to the equation. It would be a
shame to let that wither away.

on roadblocks, i suspect that's right. the AD most likely
already thought of all these things (he's seen them before i
imagine!) and maybe even attempted, only to find out he's
limited in what he can do.
at this point, i just hope they do something. because it's not
going to fix itself on its own...

Part of the problem (how large is subject to debate), is that
SBU basketball has evolved into a transfer/juco program. The
resurrection of the program took place with primarily 4-year
guys going back to the Dougher, Brenton, Joyner teams...rolling
into the Warney years. Not saying the support still shouldn't be
there, but not the same vibe today.

Certainly a fair point, and part of the problem. The Bball
program took quite the hit 2 years ago, when
Garcia/Olaniyi/Otchere/Foreman/Latimer all decided to pick up
and transfer. Of course, the full impact of that happening
turned out to be severely overshadowed by Covid, Tough to
retain talent as a mid-major in this new NCAA environment.

all true. in fact with the transfer rules changing, and the
advent of proper free agency, this happens elsewhere too. i
think it just depends on whether we end up the winner or loser,
which is a moving target and remains to be seen.
this came out just today, and while it is lax-specific, it
       addresses similar issues:
