Lace up your shoes, boys. We have a track meet coming to IFCU.
Hofstra entered this season in the same boat as us, with only
five players returning from last year's team, and when the
season started, the offense being ahead of where they were
defensively. While they haven't been outstanding, their offense
more than makes up for it. They're probably the second best
shooting team we'll face this year behind Kansas, making more
than 37% of their threes, and overall they shoot it at 48%.
They've gone over 80 in each of their last four games, shooting
better than 50% from the field in that span.
We've seen these guys do it to us before. Cooks, if you recall,
came over after a decorated career at NJIT—lightning quick,
tough with the ball, a gnat defensively. This will be Ray's
fifth Hofstra-Stony Brook game—he knocked down five threes in a
win against us in 2019. He's a deadly shooter as is Silverio,
who's a veteran of the series as well and is making the most of
his increased minutes. The transfer market giveth (Tareq Coburn,
Isaac Kante, Vukasin Masic—who we'll see with Maine later) but
also bore fruit with Estrada (Oregon), Dubar (Iowa State) and
Abayomi Iyiola (Arkansas). They had bit roles there but have
made a splash at Hofstra, particularly Estrada, who's already
won two POTW honors in the CAA. He went the Olaniyi route in a
way, going from an all-conference performer at St. Peter's to
       the big time and back.
I know this is billed as a battle for Long Island, but really,
we've lost the last five and are 4-18 all-time in the series. I
don't know Speedy Claxton but to have an alum and NBA veteran
playing against superior competition makes it just a
       night-and-day thing.
My spread's a lot higher than what we'll likely see Vegas open
with tomorrow, but I expect that to climb as gametime
approaches. Hofstra's at full strength and has played teams like
Maryland and Houston very tough, and all of their losses have
come in tight games against teams in the top 100 or so.
Meanwhile, we're coming off a 29-point home loss to Wagner. I
just don't see how it stays at two.
Just look at the assists per game—almost 17 a night. That's good
       for 30th in the country. Assist-to-turnover ratio—they're 10th.
That's just good offense right there. We don't rank in the top
       100 in anything (
  HTML http://stats.ncaa.org/teams/527409).
       I know
that numbers aren't everything, but they gotta mean something.
The good news is that I suspect we can compete on the glass,
which is just the theme of the year for us. Hofstra's had their
own issues with that, and you can see why with how they're
distributing their minutes. I really don't think we want to go
up and down with this team, even though that's how the roster's
built. Closing out on their shooters is going to be so so
important. Everybody on the floor can shoot it comfortably, and
it's anybody's guess who will lead them in scoring—note the five
       guys in double figures.
Let's see what we can do here. I'd love to see a crowd show
up—did you see that 4 for $50 Wolves Den deal? Not bad. I can
       eat!
I've been surprised before this year—did not see the Yale win
coming. So maybe we have another surprise up our sleeves.

Agree that your line is more accurate than the KenPom line,
       BUT..................
It appears that Olaniyi may be playing. Check out his Twitter
handle at @ohgi_e, and his "OK, I'm back" tweet.

Ooh, that does change things. A little. I have to think he'll be
on a minutes limit, but it'll be good to have his energy and
leadership out there, especially for conference season.
       Is a game in the 70s a track meet? Maybe that's a stretch. I
just feel like there are so many guards out there that they
       should go up and down.

Much has been made in the early going of our lack of toughness
and rebounding margin (rightly so). However, given the better
size matchup this week, I figured I'd find a key for the
offense. It looks like all signs point to Anthony Roberts.
A-Rob's 3 worst games by Offensive Efficiency this year have
been Kansas, Wagner and GMU. If he gets his shots going early we
have a chance. If not, we may be in for another long one.

Good stuff! I don’t think there’s any doubt about how important
       he is.
Between the opponent and the fact we got pummeled on our home
floor last time, let’s see if we show some fire tomorrow night.

I'll admit, after that Wagner game I'm tempted to pack it in on
this team and Ford, but this is a rivarly game. We NEED this
       tonight. I'll be tuning in.

Gotta be pleased with that half. I really think we’ve made them
work for every bucket, contesting threes, not giving up too many
       shots inside.
Impressive work on the boards, and we’re playing small most of
the time. Habwe was our 5 for a time. But Hofstra isn’t going to
       bully us either.
Let’s see if we can pull this thing out.
