i think many were blindsided by the pandemic and college free
agency all happening at the same time. but the fact is- you
have to prepare for such and adjust on the fly; we had this
problem for a while beforehand- until we signed otchere. a
hundred fouls later, we had the same problem. until gueye
showed up. and then they left. now we are back to where we
were. and then ford signed nahar and muratori, etc.
i guess my point is, we load up our teams with guards, and then,
naturally, everyone shoots the ball all the time. and then we
lose every year in the tournament in one of the weakest
conferences around, and cant reconcile it with 20 win seasons
and overhyped recruits and the new arena and the "best job" in
the AEC....

I'd take that bet. In a heartbeat. I don't care how bad of an AD
Shawn is or what people think he is. Unless SBU wins the AE for
the next two years, Geno Ford won't even sniff another head
coaching job, let alone get an extension here at SBU.

In any other conference or school, yes. I'll agree with you. but
this is SBU we are talking about. This school has decided to
turn its backs on athletics, and the new President has zero
experience, and or interest in college sports. I get the
impression she'd rather have SBU go back down to D3 for all
sports so not have to worry about funding sports..
Just take a look at Football and coach P. He is arguable the
worst HC in the CAA and has been for quite some time. SH has no
interest in canning him and replacing him any time soon. Now, is
that coming from the higher-ups? yeah, I do believe so. If SH
had a blank check, I would think he would fire coaches in this
school at will and find a better replacement. The bottom line is
money and priorities. This university has decided to move in a
different direction and focus all its resources on academics,
and not athletics. I can't say they are wrong. It is a school
you know. But, it is what it is.
I saw this change after Stanley departed for a Power 5 school
and they hired McInnis. Just read her resume and her
experiences. McInnis was hired to make SBU the #1 school in the
country when it comes to diversity, equity, and inclusion
initiatives.
Read up on her studies. Does this sound like a President who
cares about sports?????
"Additionally, Dr. McInnis oversees the university's libraries
and museums, archival collections, research centers and academic
support units. During her tenure at UT Austin, Dr. McInnis has
invested in numerous student and faculty support programs,
including the Texas Advance Commitment to expand access to
higher education for Texas families, and the Executive
Management Leadership Program to provide faculty and
administrators the opportunity to develop leadership skills
helpful in academic leadership positions. Through strategic
budgeting and strategic initiatives, she has focused efforts on
recruiting and retaining exceptional faculty.
While at UT Austin, Dr. McInnis has made significant
advancements and investments in equity, diversity and inclusion
initiatives. She created the new position of Vice Provost for
Diversity and spearheaded efforts to create school- and
college-based diversity and inclusion committees and chief
diversity officers.
Dr. McInnis has served as the executive vice president and
provost of UT Austin since 2016. Previously, she spent nearly 20
years at the University of Virginia, ultimately as the vice
provost for academic affairs. Her academic scholarship has
focused on the cultural history of the American south. She has
published extensively on American art history, including five
books on the subject. Her most recent book, Slaves Waiting for
Sale: Abolitionist Art and the American Slave Trade (University
of Chicago in 2011) was awarded the Charles C. Eldredge Book
Prize from the Smithsonian American Art Museum for outstanding
scholarship in American Art."
This school legacy is gone. Lost forever.

I don't know how McKissic can come from Texas, see how awesome
the Longhorn atmosphere is, and not want to bring that here. She
literally has only one job and is dead silent on it.
TBH, I don't think Stanley did anything Power 5-worthy here that
would make him appealing to a school like Michigan State.

i get what youre saying but there are many in the
"sophisticated" academic circles that would rather see athletics
go away completely.
which is fine, they can think what they want. id argue of
course that athletics often enhances academic profile. of
course there are exceptions (UNC!).

I’m sure that the priority for McInnis and previous presidents
have been keeping the academic/research side robust and strong,
and Rightly so. That is Stony Brook’s identity. We have to make
sure not to get kicked out of AAU like Nebraska. It’s a status
symbol. We have to make sure we stay in the top 100 US news
public ranking, which went down recently.
I love Stony Brook athletics, but never at the expense of
academic side. I’m not sorry I feel this way.
The goal should be to enhance athletics success without
sacrificing the academic side. If we can pull it off great. I
will be rooting for Seawolves. I’m sure a capable savvy athletic
Director can do wonder with this program within the resources
and budget we have. Basically find a Fiore 2.0 minus his warts.

I agree, IBOsbu. My kids all went to SBU, and they are all
doing well, largely due to their efforts, and the academic
reputation of SBU. That comes first and foremost, and you are
spot on in that regard.
I too, am an SBU alum. The only thing I'll add to your
statements are that I've seen a major transformation in
athletics since the 1970's. A beautiful indoor arena today,
compared to a dusty, pre-Pritchard gymnasium back then. A
beautiful football stadium today, compared to playing in a
sub-par high-school-like field back then. A move from D3 to D2
to D1 in athletics. Maybe I'm being selfish as a fan of our
local SBU sports, but I would hate to see this progress thrown
away a la Hartford and Hofstra football. Too much effort went
into this upgrade. And as CoB stated, I too am a believer that
a quality athletics program has an effect on the University
profile and its reputation at large. Academics and Athletics
need not be mutually exclusive; one feeds the other, and the sum
of the parts provide an overall better product, IMO.
Although I've never seen any comments that would lead us to
believe that McGinnis will "shut down" athletics at SBU, it is a
tad concerning that she hasn't mentioned its importance in any
of her public statements. Perhaps that's intentional; perhaps
not. I do agree that we need a Fiore 2.0 to take our programs
to that next level. It will be interesting to see what
transpires in the next year or 2.

just to fuel the fire a bit- what happened to enrollment at...
gonzaga, clemson, GMU, FGC, app state after their unforeseen
successes?
lots more examples, those are merely the ones that come to mind
in the last 15 years. i wager most couldnt point to gonzaga on
a map, or tell which state it's in. maybe nowt they know.

Stony Brook has a money problem now. The root of all evil is
what drives a university. In SBU's case, it is athletics. In
Zags case, they value their basketball program because they
don't have football. But big money is being poured into that
program, keeping it solvent. In the SBU case. What do we really
have that keeps money pouring in?? Nothing. Sadly, and I hope I
am wrong, but SBU athletics is heading down the same path as
Hartford. LIU might be the king of Long island when it comes to
D1 college sports.

There's a fine line between keeping academics strong and
continuing to accept people who act closer to hollow robots than
actual human beings. There is so much to make fun of about the
types of people who Stony Brook is associated with, and that
plays a role into the inexcusable student section sighting in
the Albany football game, the not-full student section for a
Saturday basketball game broadcasted on SNY, etc. From what I
can see, the demographics of the school have gotten even worse
since I graduated.
These same problems existed 10 years ago. This is not new
information. But in 10 years, Stony Brook continues to allow
this glaring weakness to glare even harder. I have not seen one
meaningful attempt at patching a severely bleeding wound.
