OK, ladies and gents, .500 is right there in front of us, and
all we've got to do is win a very winnable game at home. I would
assume nothing though. American was picked to finish fifth (out
of 10 teams) in the Patriot League so there are expectations
there. And TBH, as long as we're guard centric, it's going to
come down to how well we shoot it that day. So we'll see.
American's got two real nice guards in Beckton and Smalls, who
ought to make our guards work for their points. Beckton, who had
15 in our last meeting, is pretty steady, and he's going to be
tough on Roberts or whomever as a two-time All-Patriot defensive
team pick. American was out in front of Duquesne before Beckton
left with foul trouble and that's when they made their run. The
Dukes beat their brakes off inside with 44 points in the paint
and 26 free throws, accounting for all but 18 of their points.
Like us, they've really struggled defensively, allowing teams to
shoot 51 percent from the field, including better than 40
percent from three. That's not defending anybody. Not that we're
       much better!
The offense isn't bad. Beckton can shoot it and is tough going
to the basket. Smalls can get to the hole, and he's got shooters
spotting up. They get pretty good looks. I also like the kid
Rogers, who has some ability around the hoop and seems like a
multi-dimensional guy who they can get the ball to at the elbow.
O'Neil won the Newcomer of the Year award in the Patriot so he's
got ability—moves well and has a smooth stroke. As a whole, they
aren't electric and don't have a Saeed Nelson alpha dog like
prior years, but it's a good fundamental offense.
Because of that, I do worry. I think of the times when UMBC and
Hartford and Vermont have broken us down and kicked it out for
wide open shots, and we were at the mercy of whether it's a good
shooting night or not. And they CAN shoot it. Beckton made more
than 45 percent of his threes last year, and O'Neil shot 39
       percent.
Like I said in the previous game post, I think this has the
chance to be our best shooting team since Warney left. Still
early—we've hit some big, sometimes insane shots from deep, in
close, on stepbacks, etc. I admit to occasionally groaning or
covering my eyes in that Yale game. I'd still rather see this
thing flow better, and we could regress, but we've seen
Policelli come on, Roberts take off, and Tykei take it to
another level too. JRod ought to hit his stride soon—but you
gotta like what he did defensively at Yale. I'll take that too!
It's not 2016. In our tournament year, Woodhouse, Sekunda and
Puriefoy were insane from deep—all better than 40 percent in
conference play (including Woodhouse at .492). I think that's a
combination of having an upper-echelon coach, an NBA guy in the
middle and them being good shooters. But you can't deny our
       shotmaking to this point.
There's fluctuation with that though. I'm hoping that here we
can find a nice balance. Roberts/Beckton will be a good
matchup—I have reason to think that Roberts wins it though. I
also think we're the more athletic team and I'm hoping that pays
dividends offensively and in getting second chances.
We CANNOT have a letdown here. We're coming off a massive win.
And we may still be down two key guys. But this is a game we'll
be favored to win handily, and I'd like to see us do just that.

Thanks for the preview Checkmate. Hardly reply but always read.
FWIW it sounds like Eli will be back in time for conference
play. Lets get back to .500 tonight.

That's good news. Have been scouring SM, and haven't been able
to find anything on the severity of his injury, other than
seeing him at Yale on crutches. Not sure what the big secret
is. Of course, it'll be tough to win some of the OOC games
(Florida, Hofstra, St. Peters) without him in the lineup.

Abysmal offensive night from American. Airballs, the whole nine.
Roberts winning the showdown with Beckton with 10, 8 and 3 at
the half, whereas Beckton has the three blocks (they said four
or five at one point) but only two shots.
Good to see Jenkins back out there. He's going to be a handful
for all the northeast teams we have lined up.
       We're just way more athletic.

No question, any way you slice it, we are a very athletic team.
Still question some of these rushed contested 3’s though. If we
can stay healthy and get Olaniyi back for the Conf games, we
will certainly challenge for the #1 seed. American very
       unimpressive so far.

Had yourself a nice blowout win. Would be a shame if no one saw
       it.
Oh wait, attendance in the 1800s!!! Oh my god that is pitiful.

Olayni was in street clothes and was walking with a cane. I
think he is finished for the season..
